The Position

The City of Riverside is accepting applications for the position of Recreation Leader to fill multiple vacancies in the Recreation division of the Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Department. The eligibility list established may be used to fill the current and/or upcoming vacancies within this classification for up to six (6) months.

The Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department provides innovative recreational experiences and social enrichment opportunities and continues to address the changing needs for people of all ages and cultures, in a variety of safe and attractive parks. Working for the Recreation and Community Services Division will allow you to work at one of eleven community centers including the Youth Opportunity Center and two senior centers; plus, you can get the opportunity to work with sports and youth programming; senior and disabled programming; special programs and events; aquatics programming; facility reservations; and marketing and sponsorships.

Under close to general supervision, to direct, supervise, organize, and conduct recreation activities for various age groups as assigned; performs general facility inspections and maintenance to recreation facilities as assigned.

We anticipate a high volume of applications for this recruitment. To manage the large candidate pool efficiently and equitably, applications will be reviewed in bands (A, B, and C) based on the date your application is submitted.

Work Performed

Typical duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Participate in and conduct recreation activities, program planning, attend staff meetings, review current programs and make recommendations to immediate supervisor.
  • Plan, organize and supervise group activities and programs.
  • Keep score or records for citywide youth sports programs as needed.
  • Conduct recreation programs, after-school programs, special events, or youth sports as assigned.
  • Chaperone at dances, excursions or special events.
  • Monitor volunteers to ensure they are meeting city and department requirements as assigned.
  • Develop participant and spectator interest, enthusiasm and participation.
  • Issue, collect, properly maintain and inventory city equipment and supplies.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate records and reports of programs and activities.
  • Set up rooms for activities or rentals.
  • Supervise and monitor facility rentals to ensure applicant complies with city and department policies and procedures.
  • Be familiar with the department flyers and publications and be able to share accurate information with customers regarding department programs/services.

Qualifications

Education: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade or currently enrolled in high school.

Experience: Zero to six months full-time experience as a group activity worker.

Necessary Special Requirement:

  • Must be 16 years of age or older.

Highly Desired Qualifications:

  • CPR and First Aid Certified
  • Bilingual skills.
  • Experience working with youth, senior, or diverse populations in a recreational or educational setting.
  • Experience leading structured activities like games, crafts, or educational workshops.

Temporary Variable & Full-Time

Employees hired in a temporary position working "variable" part-time hours (less than 30 hrs/week) may be eligible to enroll in a health insurance plan offered by the City upon meeting full-time eligibility at the end of their measurement period (12 months). Employees hired in a temporary full-time (more than 30 hrs/week) position will be eligible to enroll in a health insurance plan offered by the City upon hire.

All temporary employees are automatically enrolled in a mandatory Deferred Compensation plan in lieu of Social Security. Temporary employees are also eligible for paid sick leave as outlined in the Fringe Benefits and Salary Plan, Section 7. Employees may be eligible for CalPERS membership upon hire if they are already a CalPERS member, Tier designation is based on membership date. If no prior CalPERS membership exists, employees must meet CalPERS eligibility requirements before being brought into CalPERS membership.
