Job Description

The City of Renton Parks and Recreation Department is seeking enthusiastic and dependable Recreation Leaders to join our After School STREAM (Science, Technology, Recreation, Engineering, Arts, and Math) Program at the Highlands Neighborhood Center. We are hiring multiple positions to help provide a fun, safe, and engaging after-school experience for youth.

As a Recreation Leader, you will work alongside the Recreation Coordinator and other City staff to plan, prepare, and lead a variety of recreational and enrichment activities for elementary and middle school-aged participants. Programs may include STREAM-based learning, leadership development, games, arts and crafts, special events, volunteer opportunities, family engagement nights, and community-building activities.

In addition to leading activities, Recreation Leaders assist with program setup and cleanup, transporting participants, maintaining a clean and welcoming facility, and helping create a positive environment where every child feels included, supported, and encouraged to learn and grow.

This is an ongoing supplemental position during the school year. Most shifts are Monday through Friday from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., with additional opportunities to support special events, school breaks, and other Parks and Recreation programs.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Recreation Leader 1:

  • At least 16 years of age.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a required background check.
  • Volunteer experience related to recreation preferred.

Recreation Leader 2:

  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Possess high school diploma or GED.
  • 2 - 4 years of previous work, or volunteer, experience related to the designated or assigned recreation program required.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a required background check.
  • Must possess a valid Washington State Drivers License.
  • Some positions may require a Drivers Abstract that is approved by the Risk Management department.

Recreation Leader 3:

  • At least 18 years of age, some positions may require at least 21 years of age.
  • Possess high school diploma or GED.
  • 4 - 8 years of previous work, or volunteer, experience related to the designated or assigned recreation program required.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a required background check.
  • Must possess a valid Washington State Drivers License.
  • Some positions may require a Drivers Abstract that is approved by the Risk Management department.

Recreation Leader I: Assist and support Recreation Coordinator and other City staff as needed. Provide direct assistance to Recreation Leader II and III level employees with planning, preparing, and implementing theme-based activities and field trips for youth in the designated or assigned program. This position is also responsible for the security and general cleaning of the facility.

Recreation Leader II: Provide support to Recreation Coordinator and other city staff as needed to assist with planning, preparing, and implementing recreation programs. May provide direction and oversight to Recreation Leader I level employees. Depending on designated or assigned program, activities may include field trips, events, crafts, music, movement, games, STEM instruction, adaptive recreation, sports coordination, and physical fitness. This position is also responsible for the security and general cleaning of the facility.

Recreation Leader III: Provide direction to Recreation Leader I/II level employees. Provide support to, and collaborate with, Recreation Coordinator and other city staff as needed to assist with planning, preparing, and implementing recreation programs. Depending on designated or assigned program, activities may include field trips, events, crafts, music, movement, games, STEM instruction, adaptive recreation, athletic coach, sports coordination, and physical fitness. Responsible for the designated site location to ensure proper security measures and the general cleaning of the facility.

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Instruct participants in good citizenship, sportsmanship and safety while setting a good example.
  • Provide each participant with the opportunity to succeed and improve their social skills through recreational activities.
  • Responsible for the care, safety, and supervision of program participants
  • Attend and supervise program participants during field trips and special events.
  • Provide a positive attitude toward program participants and staff; encourage and serve as a positive role model for program participants.
  • Responsible for participant discipline and behavior problems that take place during program hours; report all problems and concerns to supervisor; provide attendance and facility reports as needed.
  • Maintain communication with staff, participants and parents.
  • Understand, explain, and enforce facility rules.
  • Keep area tidy, organized, and welcoming to patrons.
  • Assist in coordination of seasonal staff and volunteer schedules.
  • Depending on position, may be responsible for overall program supervision, facilitating activities, site rentals, and field use.
  • Depending on position, may provide direction to other supplemental staff.
  • Assist staff in other recreational programs and special events as assigned.
  • Provide facility security and administer first aid as needed.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
