Recreation Program Instructor - Mah Jongg

The City of Lenexa is seeking a knowledgeable and enthusiastic Recreation Program Instructor Mah Jongg to join our team at the Lenexa Old Town Activity Center. As a Recreation Program Instructor, you will help participants learn and enjoy the game of Mah Jongg in a fun, welcoming, and supportive environment. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys teaching, connecting with others, and building community through recreation.

You will lead beginner lessons, support open play sessions, and adapt instruction to meet a variety of skill levels while encouraging participants to build confidence, friendships, and a lifelong enjoyment of the game.

Schedule:

• Varying hours within MondayFriday, 8 a.m.5 p.m.
• Approximately 510 hours per week.

Key Responsibilities:

• Teach Mah Jongg rules, gameplay, and strategies in a clear, approachable, and engaging manner.
• Lead beginner instruction and facilitate open play for returning participants.
• Create a positive, inclusive environment that encourages learning, socialization, and fun.
• Provide one-on-one guidance and support during gameplay.
• Set up and cleanup program materials, including tiles, racks, tables, and playing cards.
• Adapt instruction to accommodate a variety of skill levels and learning styles.
• Encourage friendships and community among participants.
• Promote activities by writing class descriptions, creating flyers, and assisting with marketing efforts.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Demonstrated knowledge of Mah Jongg, including game rules, gameplay, and strategy.
• High school diploma or GED.
• At least two years of instruction or customer service experience.
• CPR/AED certification (must obtain within 60 days of hire; City-paid).
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.

Starting rate of pay is $16.50 per hour.

Physical and Environmental Factors:

Work is performed in an indoor setting. This position requires the ability to lift and move supplies and materials for recreation programs, activities, and events. Visual acuity is needed for reviewing information.

Offers of employment are contingent upon the successful completion of a drug screen and background check.
