Description

Definition:

Under general supervision, organizes and conducts specialized recreation programs for the community and provides highly responsible and technical staff assistance for the Community Services Department.

Examples of Duties

Essential Job Duties:

The following tasks are essential for this position. Incumbents in this classification may not perform all of these tasks, or may perform similar related tasks not listed here.

  • Assists and participates in the planning, organization, and supervision of specialized recreation programs and events.
  • Oversees the class registration operation, inputs class data, and analyzes program data to develop statistical program information.
  • Oversees and assists with membership registration and operations.
  • Provides liaison between community services program participants and the City.
  • Speaks to community groups and schools to promote participation in scheduled activities and explains specialized programs.
  • Prepares and maintains a variety of records and reports.
  • Maintains program calendar for all program locations.
  • Assists with instructor recruitment, payments, and contract maintenance.
  • Prepares and distributes promotional materials, news release, and public service announcements for department classes, programs, and services.
  • Assists with youth and adult sports programs.
  • Assists with facility rentals.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Knowledge, Skill and Ability:

Knowledge of:

  • Personal computer and related software.
  • Principles and practices of organizing and conducting public recreation programs.
  • Recreational activities.
  • Principles and practices of clubs, centers and parks established to meet the leisure and recreational needs of community groups of all ages.
  • Record keeping and reporting procedures.

Skill and Ability to:

  • Operate a variety of office equipment including personal computer and related software.
  • Apply sound judgment in the solution of problems related to parks, recreation, and community services activities.

Training and Experience:

Any combination equivalent to experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills and abilities would be one year of recreation program involvement and/or equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with major work in recreation or related field.

Licenses and Certificates:

Possession of a valid California drivers license, live-scan fingerprinting clearance, and current First Aid and CPR certifications required.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Require vision (which may be corrected) to read small print.
  • Require the mobility to stand, stoop, reach and bend. Require mobility of arms to reach and dexterity of hands to grasp and manipulate small objects.
  • Require the ability to stand for long periods.
  • Perform lifting, pushing and/or pulling which does not exceed 50 pounds.
  • Is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
  • May be required to use personal vehicle in the course of employment.
  • May be required to attend periodic evening shifts and/or to travel within and out of City boundaries to attend shifts.
  • May be required to work at a video display terminal for prolonged periods.
  • May be required to work evenings, weekends, or holidays.

This position is a temporary position and not eligible to participate in any benefit programs of the City, except those mandated by federal or state law.

Must participate in a PARS Alterantive Retirement System 457 Plan as a replacement for Social Security.
