THE POSITION

The City of Carson is now accepting applications for Recreation Specialist position.

The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented and customer-focused professional who will support the department and the public in the effective use of ActiveNet recreation management software. They are comfortable learning and navigating systems, troubleshooting user issues, and providing clear, friendly guidance to both internal staff and community members.

  • Experience working with or supporting recreation management systems (ActiveNet experience highly desirable).

This position is a part-time/temporary, at-will (FLSA: Non-Exempt) positions that are limited to a maximum of 960 hours per fiscal year. Part-time employees are not typically eligible for benefits; however, they may qualify for health coverage and sick leave accruals subject to applicable federal and state provisions.

Job Summary:

Under general supervision, conduct special interest classes at various recreation centers; this position will also assist the reservations section by inputting and maintaining classes, activities, registration and managing the departments social media pages; and to perform related duties as required.

Position information:

This is a part-time unclassified position, limited to 980 hours per fiscal year. The role is represented by AFSCME 809 Part-Time. Work hours may vary between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Occasional weekend availability is preferred to support City events and programs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

(These functions are representative and may not be present in all positions in the class. Management reserves the right to add, modify, change or rescind related duties and work assignments.)

  • Plans, organizes and instructs special interest classes or programs.
  • Develops and schedules classes for various age groups.
  • Prepares reports on the status of the special interest class or program as needed.
  • May be assigned duties as a sports official on an urgency basis.

QUALIFICATIONS

A typical way to obtain the requisite qualifications to perform the duties of this class is as follows:

Education and/or Experience:

Completion of formal education sufficient to assure the ability to read and write at the level required for successful job performance and demonstrable proficiency in an appropriate area.

Knowledge of:

  • Special interest area of instruction; correct English usage.

Skill and Ability to:

  • Effectively communicate orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others and deal tactfully with the public.

License and Certificates:

Special qualifications for particular recreation and leisure service activities shall be added as required.

  • Employees pay the full Employee Member Contribution on a pre-tax basis.

Medical Insurance (Eligible Unit Members)

  • The City contracts with CalPERS for medical benefits, which offers employees a choice of various HMOs and PPOs.
  • The City shall pay the required monthly minimum of $143.00 towards the monthly health insurance premium.
  • For unit members who have eight (8) years or more of consecutive service with the City and currently working 1,000 hours or more per fiscal year, the City provides an optional benefits package (medical and vision) and, effective May 26, 2016, the City provides an additional $314.00 per month to be used towards these optional benefits for employee and eligible dependents.

Sick Leave

  • Paid sick leave shall accrue at the rate of one (1) hour for each 30 hours worked to a maximum of 24 hours per year.
  • Unit members shall be entitled to use accrued paid sick time beginning on the 90th day of employment, defined as sick leave accrual and usage.
  • Paid sick leave shall be taken in increments of not less than one (1) hour.

Holiday Pay (Unit members will receive holiday pay only if they are scheduled to work during the pay period in which the holiday falls).

Effective calendar year 2012, unit members will receive five (5) hours of holiday pay for each of the following holidays:

  • New Years Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day.
