Reference Librarian

Location: Bethesda, MD

Schedule: Full-Time, Monday-Friday, 8:30 AM-5:00 PM (except Federal Holidays)

Salary Range: $62,000-$64,000 annually

Work Arrangement: Onsite up to four days per week with one to two days of telework

Join Our Team Supporting the National Library of Medicine

DBG in collaboration with Zimmerman Associates Inc. is seeking a Reference Librarian to support the National Library of Medicine (NLM) in Bethesda, Maryland. This full-time position is an exciting opportunity to contribute to NLM''''s mission of advancing biomedical research, supporting healthcare and public health, and providing access to high-quality health information nationwide through its partnership with the more than 6,000-member National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NNLM).

As a member of our onsite team, you will assist researchers, librarians, scientists, healthcare professionals, and members of the public by providing authoritative health information, expert reference services, and guidance on NLM resources and databases.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Respond to email and telephone reference inquiries from researchers, librarians, scientists, healthcare professionals, and the general public regarding medical and consumer health topics.

  • Provide expert assistance using National Library of Medicine resources and databases.

  • Evaluate, develop, edit, and maintain:

  • Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  • Fact sheets

  • Standard response templates

  • Wiki triage instructions

  • Subject guides

  • Provide reference desk coverage for the NLM Reading Room and assist visitors in accessing NLM collections and conducting database searches.

  • Collaborate closely with team members and leadership to ensure exceptional customer service and information support.

  • Perform additional related duties as assigned to support project objectives.

Note: The NLM Reading Room is currently open to the public by appointment only due to ongoing renovations.

Required Qualifications

Education

  • Master of Library Science (MLS) or Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) from a college or university accredited by the American Library Association (ALA), or
  • Recent graduate of an ALA-accredited MLS or MLIS program.

Skills & Abilities

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking abilities.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds on a frequent basis.
  • Ability to work onsite up to four days per week and telework one to two days per week.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of National Library of Medicine resources and services.
  • Professional library experience, internship experience, or library assistant experience providing reference, circulation, or customer service support.
  • Experience in a medical, health sciences, hospital, or academic library environment.
  • One or more years of experience working with or supporting the National Institutes of Health (NIH), preferably the National Library of Medicine.
