Job Description

General Purpose of Job:

Provide a wide variety of routine and advanced forms of respiratory therapy procedures for the diagnosis, treatment, and care of patients with respiratory dysfunction.

Essential Duties:

This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Associates may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.

  • Assess patients' condition and initiate appropriate emergency and non-emergency procedures in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Administer aerosol medications, oxygen support therapy and perform a variety of respiratory treatments and/or diagnostic procedures. Administer care within physician approved therapist driven protocols.
  • Initiate, operate, maintain, monitor, and ensure safe patient care practices and operation of various respiratory therapy equipment and devices. Collaborate with referring physicians, primary care physicians, and medical director to establish an individualized treatment plan for each patient. Member of Code Blue Team.
  • Report/document pertinent patient care and status data in accordance with established guidelines. May accept and document physician telephone orders for respiratory therapy procedures.
  • Conduct periodic patient education relating to disease specific self-care. Monitor patient exercise, and perform psychosocial, nutritional, educational, and exercise assessments on each patient enrolled in Pulmonary Rehabilitation
  • Document and bill according to CMS guidelines and AACVPR recommendations.
  • Perform routine RT equipment maintenance, cleaning/sterilization, and ensure environmental safety.
  • Assist in the transportation of patients to or from the Pulmonary Function Lab and within the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Gym and assist the physician when performing various surgical or non-surgical respiratory/cardiology procedures.
  • Instruct RT students, medical personnel and patients and families regarding specific Respiratory Therapy procedures.

Job Requirements

General Requirements • Registered Respiratory Therapist: Credentialed by the National Board for Respiratory Care. • Licensed by the State of Michigan • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification • Must obtain CPFT within 18 months of hire and stay current with certification. • Preferred: Member of the AACVPR, MSRC, ATS or AARC Work Experience • Minimum 2 (two) years of RRT experience • Preferred: Previous Pulmonary Function Testing experience Education • Graduate from a Respiratory Therapy school Specialized Knowledge and Skills • Proficient in hospital-based computer software programs • Adaptable to sudden changes in patient scheduling • Organized, punctual, responsible • Able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on physical, psycho/social, educational, safety and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients serviced in assigned service are as related to the principle duties and responsibilities of the position. The skills and knowledge needed to provide such care may be gained through education, training, or experience. • Preferred: Previous knowledge of COPD-related disease states including physiology, classification, treatment and outcomes
