Region Director Job Description

Purpose: To provide leadership, management, and strategic oversight of local program activities within a designated geographic region of Virginia (Potomac- Fairfax Office). The Region Director is responsible for program development, competition management, and volunteer education ensuring sustainable opportunities for athletes with intellectual disabilities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Program Leadership & Management 

  • Serves as the staff liaison and communication link between the state, area and local programs.
  • Oversees the implementation of SOVA programs and services within the region including athlete recruitment and placement, volunteer training, and competition management.
  • Develops and executes an annual region plan that aligns with SOVA's strategic plan and statewide program goals.
  • Collaborates with Area programs to develop an annual plan that aligns with SOVA's strategic plan, statewide program goals and accreditation standards.
  • Supports and trains local program council members, coaches, competition directors and one-day volunteers to ensure program excellence and sustainability.
  • Serves as the primary liaison to families and community partners within the region.
  • Develops partnerships with organizations that align with SOVA's mission and program goals.
  • Serves as the primary liaison to Special Olympics College programs that engage college students with local SOVA athletes.
  • Monitors program performance, data reporting, and compliance with SOVA standards.

Athlete & Volunteer Development

  • Expands opportunities for athletes across all ages and ability levels.
  • Recruits, trains and retains a diverse base of volunteers and coaches.
  • Promotes leadership development opportunities for athletes including Athlete Leadership initiatives.

Competition & Event Management 

  • Plans, organizes and oversees region competitions, seasonal coaches' meetings, and related events.
  • Ensures all competitions meet SOVA's quality standards for safety, competition integrity, and athlete experience.
  • Collaborates with SOVA competition staff to support state-level competitions as needed.
  • Supports development staff in securing region competition sponsors.

Administration & Compliance 

  • Manages region budgets, resources and reporting in alignment with SOVA policies.
  • Ensures compliance with all health, safety, and risk management protocols.
  • Tracks and submits program metrics, participation data, and impact stories.
  • May supervise a Program Manager.

Performs other duties as assigned.
