Region Director Job Description
Purpose: To provide leadership, management, and strategic oversight of local program activities within a designated geographic region of Virginia (The Rappahannock Region consists of five programs: the greater Fredericksburg region (Area 11), Prince William County and Manassas (Area 23), Fauquier County (Area 27) and Essex, Lancaster, Northumberland, Richmond and Westmoreland Counties (Area 28), and Culpeper, Madison, Orange, Rappahannock (Area 17). This position works from home within the region.The Region Director is responsible for program development, competition management, and volunteer education ensuring sustainable opportunities for athletes with intellectual disabilities.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Program Leadership & Management
- Serves as the staff liaison and communication link between the state, area and local programs.
- Oversees the implementation of SOVA programs and services within the region including athlete recruitment and placement, volunteer training, and competition management.
- Develops and executes an annual region plan that aligns with SOVA's strategic plan and statewide program goals.
- Collaborates with Area programs to develop an annual plan that aligns with SOVA's strategic plan, statewide program goals and accreditation standards.
- Supports and trains local program council members, coaches, competition directors and one-day volunteers to ensure program excellence and sustainability.
- Serves as the primary liaison to families and community partners within the region.
- Develops partnerships with organizations that align with SOVA's mission and program goals.
- Serves as the primary liaison to Special Olympics College programs that engage college students with local SOVA athletes.
- Monitors program performance, data reporting, and compliance with SOVA standards.
Athlete & Volunteer Development
- Expands opportunities for athletes across all ages and ability levels.
- Recruits, trains and retains a diverse base of volunteers and coaches.
- Promotes leadership development opportunities for athletes including Athlete Leadership initiatives.
Competition & Event Management
- Plans, organizes and oversees region competitions, seasonal coaches' meetings, and related events.
- Ensures all competitions meet SOVA's quality standards for safety, competition integrity, and athlete experience.
- Collaborates with SOVA competition staff to support state-level competitions as needed.
- Supports development staff in securing region competition sponsors.
Administration & Compliance
- Manages region budgets, resources and reporting in alignment with SOVA policies.
- Ensures compliance with all health, safety, and risk management protocols.
- Tracks and submits program metrics, participation data, and impact stories.
- May supervise a Program Manager.
Performs other duties as assigned.
