The Clinical Dietitian conducts nutritional assessments, provides nutrition counseling to patients and prepares individualized nutrition care plans. Teaches group education sessions related to nutrition and makes nutrition related presentations to interested groups in the community. Implements patient dietary health by consulting with physicians and other health care professionals. Reviews patient records, interviews patients, assesses nutritional needs and formulates appropriate diets.
GENERAL DUTIES
Medical Nutritional Therapyof patients: Provides nutrition services and medical nutrition therapy integrated with the patient's medical goals and assists with ensuring compliance with ADA requirements and standards. Evaluates, interprets, monitors and documents the nutritional status and needs of hospitalized patients and out patients using established standards of care and practice guidelines. Identifies and provides age-specific nutrition counseling to meet the cultural needs of the patients and their families. Develops, reviews, updates, and implements educational materials to meet the needs of patients and professionals. Writes order for diet, supplement, enteral/parenteral nutrition and laboratory data per hospital policy. Plans meals for hospital patients and others who have special dietary needs. Assesses patients' nutritional needs, confers with doctors, and uses computers to analyze nutritional intake. Teaches people who need special diets how to plan and prepare foods at home.
Preceptor of clinical nutrition to newly hired clinical staff: Instructs and provides on the job training for newly hired clinical staff. Supervises daily work of dietetic technicians and provides input into evaluations.
Development of educational programs: Maintains registered dietitian (RD) status and engages in continuing professional education. Identifies continuing education opportunities and complies with Nutrition Services meeting and attendance standards.
Assists with collection and formation of required data: Participates in nutritionally related interdisciplinary projects.
EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's Degree in Dietetics, Nutrition, or related field.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
Registered Dietitian with the Commission on Dietetic Registration or obtained within the orientation period.
Licensed through the State of Louisiana Board of Examiners in Dietetics and Nutrition.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Strong interpersonal communication skills to communicate with patients, visitors, healthcare team members and other employees.
Excellent oral and written communication skills required.
