Job Summary
Serve as a nutritional consultant and resource to the healthcare team, providing comprehensive nutrition care to patients and families. Performs nutrition assessment, diagnosis, intervention, counseling, education, and evaluation of outcomes. Collaborates with healthcare providers to develop individualized nutrition plans and supports patient wellness through education programs, clinical initiatives, and nutrition-related services.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess patients" nutritional needs using medical records, patient/family interviews, anthropometric measurements, biochemical data, medical tests, and nutrition-focused physical findings.
- Identify and document nutrition diagnoses and develop individualized nutrition care plans.
- Implement nutrition interventions, including meals, snacks, supplements, enteral nutrition, parenteral nutrition, nutrition education, and counseling.
- Monitor food tolerance, nutritional intake, and patient progress toward established goals.
- Monitor and evaluate nutrition-related clinical outcomes and modify interventions as appropriate.
- Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals regarding patient nutrition care.
- Serve as a nutrition consultant and communicate relevant diet therapy updates, laboratory findings, and nutrition-related concerns to the healthcare team.
- Educate patients and families on nutrition, therapeutic diets, and post-discharge nutritional needs.
- Document nutrition assessments, interventions, education, and follow-up in the medical record.
- Develop and conduct nutrition education classes, community programs, in-service training, and seminars.
- Participate in nutrition-related special projects and committees.
- Develop and maintain educational resources appropriate for patients and other audiences.
- Supervise, teach, mentor, and precept dietetic interns and students.
- Serve as a liaison with culinary wellness and foodservice teams to address patient, employee, visitor, and staff nutrition needs.
- Maintain professional knowledge, skills, ethics, and compliance with organizational policies.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications
Required
- Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) credential through the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND).
- For RD/RDN credentials obtained before January 1, 2024:
- Bachelor"s degree in Dietetics or a related field.
- Completion of an ACEND-accredited Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD).
- Completion of an approved supervised practice program/dietetic internship.
- For initial CDR registration effective January 1, 2024 or later:
- Master"s degree required.
- Bachelor"s degree in Dietetics or a related field.
- Completion of an ACEND-accredited DPD and supervised practice program/dietetic internship.
- Ability to read, write, and speak English and understand medical terminology.
- Strong knowledge of clinical nutrition assessment, nutrition diagnosis, intervention, and evaluation.
- Ability to interpret nutritional, anthropometric, biochemical, and medical data.
- Knowledge of therapeutic diets and nutrition support, including enteral and parenteral nutrition.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with patients, families, and healthcare professionals.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions and perform basic arithmetic calculations.
- Strong computer skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
- Ability to manage multiple responsibilities and work effectively both independently and as part of a healthcare team.
- Strong patient education, counseling, problem-solving, and customer service skills.
- Ability to demonstrate teamwork, initiative, flexibility, and willingness to learn.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced Practice Certification.
- ICU experience.
- Less recent full-time Registered Dietitian experience may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Required Certification & Licensure
- Active Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) credential issued by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR).
Preferred Certification & Licensure
- Advanced Practice Certification preferred.
Working Conditions
Position may be based in a hospital or ambulatory/mobile imaging setting. Exposure to radiation, high-voltage equipment, and infectious diseases is possible with appropriate safety precautions. Position may require assisting with patient transfers and moving equipment.
