    Registered Nurse (RN) - Surgical Oncology Physician Practice

    Position Summary

    The Registered Nurse (RN) is a vital member of the multidisciplinary surgical oncology team, providing comprehensive nursing care to patients throughout the continuum of surgical cancer treatment. The RN collaborates closely with surgeons, advanced practice providers, medical assistants, and ancillary staff to coordinate patient care, provide education, facilitate treatment planning, and ensure exceptional clinical outcomes. This role requires strong clinical judgment, excellent communication skills, compassion, and the ability to manage complex patient needs in a fast-paced outpatient setting.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    Clinical Care

    • Perform comprehensive nursing assessments and triage patients in person and by telephone.
    • Evaluate patient symptoms and determine appropriate interventions or escalation of care.
    • Monitor patients before and after office-based procedures.
    • Review laboratory, pathology, and imaging results, communicating findings and provider recommendations to patients.
    • Coordinate preoperative and postoperative care for surgical oncology patients.
    • Identify urgent clinical concerns and facilitate timely evaluation and treatment.

    Patient Education

    • Educate patients and caregivers regarding:

    • Surgical procedures

    • Preoperative preparation

    • Postoperative recovery

    • Wound care and drain management

    • Medication management

    • Nutrition and activity restrictions

    • Signs and symptoms requiring immediate medical attention

    • Reinforce physician treatment plans and ensure patient understanding.

    • Provide emotional support and resources throughout the patient''s cancer journey.

    Care Coordination

    • Coordinate referrals to specialists, medical oncology, radiation oncology, genetics, nutrition, social work, and other support services.
    • Schedule diagnostic testing and ensure timely completion.
    • Ensure continuity of care across outpatient, inpatient, and procedural settings.

    Clinical Documentation

    • Document nursing assessments, interventions, patient education, and communications accurately in the electronic medical record (EMR).
    • Maintain accurate medication reconciliation and allergy documentation.
    • Process medication refills according to practice protocols.
    • Complete disability forms, FMLA paperwork, and other clinical documentation as appropriate.

    Telephone Triage

    • Assess patient concerns using evidence-based triage guidelines.
    • Provide clinical advice within scope of practice.
    • Escalate urgent or emergent concerns to the provider.
    • Document all patient communications in the EMR.

    Quality and Compliance

    • Maintain compliance with HIPAA, OSHA, CMS, and organizational policies.
    • Participate in quality improvement initiatives.
    • Assist with infection prevention and patient safety activities.
    • Maintain current nursing licensure and required certifications.

    Required:

    • High School diploma required
    • Graduate of an accredited Nursing Program required
    • Valid NJ RN License

    Preferred:

    • Minimum of 2 years of clinical nursing experience preferred.
    • Experience in oncology, surgery, surgical oncology, ambulatory care, or physician practice strongly preferred.
    • Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills.
    • Knowledge of oncology and surgical patient care.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
    • Strong organizational and time management skills.
    • Proficiency with electronic medical records.
    • Ability to educate patients with compassion and sensitivity.
    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
    • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and sit for extended periods.
    • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
    • Manual dexterity sufficient to perform nursing procedures.
    • Ability to use computers, telephones, and other office equipment.
