School Nurse RN – Part Time Brehm Mission:To empower students with learning disabilities and differences to recognize and optimize their potential throughout their lives. By fostering a family environment where educational, social, emotional, health and well-being needs of each are addressed through a focused, holistic program. Through partnership among students, administration, faculty, staff, parents, board, alumni, researchers and the professional community.Position Overview:Under the supervision of the Director of Education, the Nurse focuses on serving each student's medical, psychological and health needs as they arise.Essential Responsibilities:Make daily nursing assessments regarding students' medical needs and state of health, and provide/coordinate needed care to Brehm students and OPTIONS students, excluding OPTIONS Extension Phase studentsShared on-call duties to deal with medical issues as they arise after hours. May occasionally need to return to the Brehm campus/OPTIONS apartments or a hospital after hours to manage emergency medical needsEducate and counsel students on an individual basis regarding their individual medical health issuesComplete documentation of signs and symptoms, physician's diagnoses, treatment, and resolution of the issue with attention to dates and durationSchedule students' medical and psychological appointments and facilitate companionship (as needed) as well as transportation to the appointmentsProvide daily schedule of student transportation needs to the driverPrepares and maintains students' insurance information in vehicle pouches Arrange necessary follow-up appointments with physicians, attention to physician's diagnoses, and carrying out the physician's ordered treatmentsCommunicate with parents and guardians promptly regarding student appointments and medical issuesPrepare student medications in weekly pill containers to allow for supervised self-administration of medicationsRegular monitoring of student electronic Medication Administration RecordMonitor and document effectiveness and side effects of all medications distributedDeliver written prescriptions to pharmacies and pick up medicationsWork collaboratively to provide staff, student, and parent training and orientationReview and manage medical records including physicals, Permissions for Emergency Care, and immunization histories. The school must have these updated and in compliance with Illinois law and Brehm's admission policy. This includes ensuring that copies of permission for emergency care and insurance information of students available in appropriate Brehm dorms/OPTIONS apartments and all vehiclesOrder, stock and inventory all medical supplies needed throughout both campuses, including personal protective equipmentComplete laundry for infirmaryGeneral office duties, such as filing, typing correspondences, answering phones, faxing, and maintaining an orderly office and pick up mail and packages from the Administrative Building, as needed dailyOther duties as assignedKnowledge and Experience Requirements:Psychiatric nursing experience, highly preferredExperience with acute hospital, adolescent health care, home health and/or public health, or previous school nurse experience, preferredMust have a minimum of 3 years experienceMust be CPR certifiedTeaching knowledge and skills in the areas of health education, human sexuality, substance abuse, nutrition, and weight maintenance and lossProactive approach regarding health, and must have a comprehensive wellness focus to nursingGood communication skills, especially regarding problem solving, education, therapeutic support, and encouragement Conditions of Employment:RN or LPN with valid Illinois licensureAbility to pass a criminal background checkAbility to pass a driving background checkValid vehicle insuranceAbility to maintain a clean driving recordAbility to maintain a valid Illinois driver's license First Aid and CPR certified Skills Required:Strong ability to multitask and flexible skillsetStrong desire to learn and work as part of a holistic teamEffective leadership skills to instruct, supervise, and motivate students Ability to demonstrate sensitivity to the population and age group served Possess a genuine interest in the physical, social, and emotional growth of our studentsAbility to exhibit a mature, positive attitudeAbility to maintain a therapeutic, supportive stance with all constituents: students, parents, faculty and staffKnowledge in the area of learning differencesUnderstanding of practices used to aid students in their success, problem-solving, and overall wellnessClear boundaries regarding role with studentsExcellent time management skillsWork Hours:Monday through Friday, usually from 7:30 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. Some variances in start and end time will occur, as needs ariseAfter hours on-call, as determined by scheduling needs Work Conditions: Mostly indoor office workOccasional outdoor experiences on Brehm campus or at the OPTIONS programPhysical Demands: Must have the physical stamina to walk throughout campus, climb stairs, and must be able to execute motor movements required to provide medical careCoordination of both gross and fine muscular movements, equilibrium, and integrated use of the senses of touch and vision are necessaryRegularly sit, stand, bend down, crouchEducational Requirements: Associate degree in nursing requiredBachelors degree preferredDepartment: Health and Well-BeingSupervisor: Director of EducationSupervision of Others: NoneTravel: No travel away from home requiredOccasional local trips to hospital or student appointmentsCompensation: Salary, commensurate with experienceClassification: Salary-Exempt 12-month, AcademicPart Time
