Contract Details

  • Position Type: Contract (Travel Nursing)
  • Contract Duration: 3 months
  • Pay Rate: $55.00 / Hour (USD)
  • Shift / Schedule: Night Shift, 12-hour shifts (18:45 07:15), 3x12; self-scheduling per unit guidelines with oversight from leadership; no block scheduling

Job Summary

This is a Cardiac Telemetry (CTU) travel nursing position on a challenging, high-acuity, fast-paced unit. The unit serves as the primary cardiac and stroke unit, consistently turning over 78 to 90 patients per week. A team lead is available to assist with admissions and discharges. The high-acuity environment requires nurses who are comfortable with high patient ratios and complex cardiac diagnoses, including patients on COVID protocols utilizing opti-flow and BIPAP during surge periods.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide care for stable pre/post procedure cardiac patients, including pacemaker implantation, implanted cardioverter/defibrillators, cardiac catheterization, and TR bands
  • Manage post uncomplicated interventional peripheral vascular procedure/cardiac interventions without sheaths
  • Care for patients requiring non-rebreather mask with stable O2 saturation (must be on pulse ox)
  • Monitor and manage patients with unstable angina, low-risk chest pain evaluation, CHF, dysrhythmias, all new CVA, and TIA patients
  • Run and titrate multiple cardiac drips including Cardizem, Dopamine, Amiodarone, and others
  • Operate telemetry and pulse ox, high-flow O2 (stable), non-rebreather mask (only if palliative), and BIPAP (only if chronic use no new BIPAP)
  • Utilize unit systems including Pyxis, Dimensions (EPIC), and SBAR for medication, documentation, and communication
  • Manage a patient assignment of up to 6 patients; be prepared to turn over a complete assignment and restart within a single shift
  • Participate in on-call duties; frequency of on-call depends on patient census
  • Float as required per unit needs
  • Work every other weekend, 2 Mondays and 2 Fridays in a 6-week period as required
  • Complete 36-hour unit orientation; must be available every day during week one for hospital orientation
  • Adhere to strict RTO policy: no RTO after booking and no working out RTO onsite; violations may result in contract cancellation and DNR status

Required Skills

  • IV start proficiency
  • Telemetry monitoring
  • Pre- and post-procedure cardiac patient care
  • Experience managing cardiac drips (Cardizem, Dopamine, Amiodarone, etc.)
  • Ability to titrate Cardizem drips
  • PCI (Percutaneous Coronary Intervention) experience
  • Comfortable with 1:5 6 patient ratios; must be able to take 6 patients during surge
  • Experience in a fast-paced, high-acuity unit with similar ratios/acuity
  • Familiarity with Pyxis, Dimensions (EPIC), and SBAR
  • Must pass EKG testing prior to start

Education Requirements

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) Required
  • BCLS (Basic Cardiovascular Life Support) Required
  • NIH Stroke Scale certification Required
  • RN License Required
  • Flu vaccination Required (medical/religious exemptions only)

Required Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of nursing experience; experience on a similarly challenging unit with comparable ratios and acuity is required
  • Traveler experience: first-time travelers accepted
  • Local candidates accepted

Work Environment / Physical Requirements

  • Highly fast-paced, high-acuity cardiac and stroke unit
  • Target patient ratio: 1:5 6; may fluctuate based on unit needs; travelers must be comfortable taking 6 patients during surge
  • Unit typically turns over 78 90 patients per week; nurses may turn over their complete patient assignment within a single shift
  • Unit currently houses COVID-positive patients utilizing opti-flow and BIPAP during surge
  • The high side (23-bed side) of CTU is a COVID unit that accepts patients on opti-flow and acute BIPAPs during a COVID surge
  • Float requirement: yes
  • On-call requirement: yes; frequency depends on patient census
  • Weekend requirement: every other weekend; 2 Mondays and 2 Fridays in a 6-week period required
  • Self-scheduling per unit guidelines with oversight from leadership; no block scheduling
  • Blanketrol in use on unit
  • PROHIBITED equipment/patient conditions: unstable O2 with BIPAP, non-rebreather on non-palliative patients, respiratory rate exceeding threshold, K greater than 60 mEq/Liter, no new BIPAP
  • Scrubs: Navy blue or white scrubs, or a mixture of both; Novant t-shirts allowed all days; jackets must match uniform material (not fleece) and color; no crocs with holes

Important Notes

  • RTO policy is strict: RTO after booking is NOT allowed and is NOT allowed to be worked out onsite. Any call-offs or additional RTO on unit could result in a contract cancellation and DNR (Do Not Rehire).
  • RTO maximum: 7-day max for AYA Auto Offer
  • Must pass EKG testing prior to start for this specialty
  • Unit will accept contract lengths of 13 26 weeks
  • 36 guaranteed hours can be offered
  • Unit orientation is 36 hours; travelers must be available every day during week one for hospital orientation
  • No block scheduling permitted
