Registered Nurse Care Coordinator (RNCC) - Radiation Oncology

Cancer care is deeply personal, and this RN Care Coordinator role is built for a nurse who wants to make treatment feel more understandable, coordinated, and human for patients navigating radiation oncology.

As a Registered Nurse Care Coordinator in Radiation Oncology at UVA Health, you will help patients prepare for treatment, manage side effects, connect with supportive resources, and feel known throughout their course of care. This is a meaningful opportunity for an oncology-minded RN who values continuity, patient education, team connection, and the ability to blend direct patient care with thoughtful coordination work.

The Role

In this role, you will serve as a consistent clinical touchpoint for cancer patients receiving radiation treatments. You will help patients understand what to expect before treatment begins, follow them throughout their therapy, coordinate supportive care needs, and partner closely with the radiation oncology team to help patients move through treatment with confidence and support.

This is a Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. role with no weekends and no holidays. The position offers a hybrid feel, combining direct patient interaction with desk-based coordination, phone triage, documentation, and care planning. There is also potential for one remote day per week once the nurse is established and performing successfully.

A typical day may include:

• Meeting with assigned patients, often weekly, to assess needs, reinforce education, and support treatment readiness.
• Preparing patients before their first radiation treatment by reviewing expectations, side effects, and available resources.
• Placing supportive care referrals when additional focused support is needed.
• Triaging patient phone calls and helping resolve clinical questions in a timely, compassionate way.
• Coordinating care across providers, services, and patient needs.
• Documenting and communicating effectively in the Epic EHR.
• Supporting patients who may be receiving treatment over an extended course, sometimes up to 35 treatment days, allowing nurses to build meaningful therapeutic relationships.

The pace is dynamic because every patient and every day can look different. Radiation oncology experience is preferred, but not required. Oncology experience, comfort with wound care, enteral feeding, IV therapy, and Epic are all helpful in preparing for success.

You will not be expected to figure it out alone. Onboarding is individualized, with support from experienced nurses and leaders until you are comfortable practicing independently. Within the first year, the goal is for you to become confident in recognizing radiation-related side effects, coordinating appropriate interventions, and managing common treatment toxicities with increasing efficiency and proficiency.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing from an accredited nursing program.

Experience: 1 year of registered nursing experience required, 3 years of related and relevant registered nursing experience strongly preferred. Specialty Board Certification strongly preferred

License/Certification: Licensed to Practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia. American Heart Association (AHA) Health Care Provider BLS certification is required.

Job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently traveling, and bending/stooping. Proficient communicative, auditory, and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 20 - 50lbs. May be exposed to chemicals, blood/body fluids, and infectious diseases.

The pay range for this role is $85,820.80 - $113,401.60 annually. Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate''s qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education.
