Reports To: Director of Nursing / Chief Nursing OfficerPosition SummaryThe Medical-Surgical Nurse Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations, clinical care delivery, staffing, and administrative functions of the medical-surgical nursing unit. The Nurse Manager ensures high-quality patient care, regulatory compliance, staff development, and operational efficiency while promoting a safe, patient-centered environment.Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Direct and supervise the daily operations of the medical-surgical unit.
  • Ensure delivery of safe, high-quality patient care in accordance with hospital policies and evidence-based practices.
  • Manage staffing schedules, staffing ratios, and unit productivity.
  • Recruit, hire, orient, mentor, and evaluate nursing staff and support personnel.
  • Provide leadership, coaching, and performance management to nursing team members.
  • Monitor patient care quality indicators, patient satisfaction scores, and clinical outcomes.
  • Collaborate with physicians, department leaders, and interdisciplinary teams to improve patient care and unit performance.
  • Ensure compliance with state, federal, and accreditation standards, including infection control and patient safety regulations.
  • Participate in budget planning, resource management, and cost-control initiatives.
  • Address patient, family, and staff concerns in a professional and timely manner.
  • Coordinate staff education, competency assessments, and ongoing professional development.
  • Lead quality improvement initiatives and support evidence-based nursing practices.
  • Maintain accurate records, reports, and documentation related to unit operations.
QualificationsEducation
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required;Master’s degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, or related field preferred.
Licensure & Certifications
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the applicable state.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred.
  • Nurse management or leadership certification preferred.
Experience
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of medical-surgical nursing experience required.
  • Previous supervisory or nurse leadership experience preferred.
  • Experience managing staff, budgets, and quality improvement initiatives preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Knowledge of healthcare regulations, accreditation standards, and quality improvement processes.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced healthcare environment.

  • Proficiency with electronic medical record (EMR) systems and healthcare technology.
