Emergency Room Registered Nurse (ER RN) Job DescriptionPosition SummaryThe Emergency Room Registered Nurse (ER RN) provides comprehensive nursing care to patients experiencing acute illnesses, injuries, and life-threatening emergencies. Working in a fast-paced emergency department, the ER RN performs rapid patient assessments, prioritizes care through triage, implements evidence-based interventions, and collaborates with multidisciplinary healthcare teams to ensure safe, efficient, and compassionate patient care.Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform comprehensive patient assessments and prioritize care using established triage protocols.
- Monitor, assess, and treat patients with medical, surgical, traumatic, and behavioral health emergencies.
- Administer medications, intravenous therapies, blood products, and emergency treatments in accordance with physician orders and hospital policies.
- Initiate and manage emergency interventions, including cardiac monitoring, airway management, wound care, and trauma stabilization.
- Recognize changes in patient condition and respond promptly to medical emergencies.
- Assist physicians and advanced practice providers during emergency procedures and resuscitations.
- Accurately document patient assessments, treatments, medications, and responses in the electronic medical record (EMR).
- Educate patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, medications, discharge instructions, and follow-up care.
- Collaborate with physicians, respiratory therapists, laboratory personnel, radiology staff, EMS providers, and other members of the healthcare team.
- Maintain infection prevention and patient safety standards while ensuring compliance with hospital policies and regulatory requirements.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives, continuing education, and department training.
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the applicable state.
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program (Associate Degree in Nursing or Bachelor of Science in Nursing;BSN preferred).
- Minimum of one year of emergency department experience preferred;new graduates may be considered based on organizational needs.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification preferred or required within designated timeframe.
- Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) certification preferred.
- Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills.
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple patients in a high-acuity environment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of emergency nursing standards, protocols, and evidence-based practice.
- Proficiency in electronic medical record documentation.
- Ability to remain calm and effective during high-stress situations.
- Commitment to delivering compassionate, patient-centered care.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Frequently lift, transfer, push, or pull patients and equipment in accordance with safe patient handling guidelines.
- Ability to perform CPR and respond quickly during emergency situations.
- Manual dexterity sufficient to operate medical equipment and perform clinical procedures.
