TITLE OF VACANCY: Registered Nurse â Itinerant (220 days)

POSITION TYPE: Professional

ADMINISTRATIVE UNIT: The West Virginia Schools for the Deaf and the Blind (WVSDB)

LOCATION: Romney, West Virginia

Provide comprehensive services of assessment, promotion, and maintenance of health for students enrolled at the WVSDB campus. The service is directed toward prevention of illness, health promotion, rehabilitation and continuity of care, health counseling and education, and care in acute illness and primary health care.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Will adhere to WVBE Policy 5902 â "Employee Code of Conduct" and the applicable WVSDB personnel policies for employee performance.

  • Provides direct services to students in support of health and wellness, as well as crisis intervention for sudden illness, injury, emotional disturbances, and other emergency situations as necessary.

  • Checks all in-patients at the Health Services Department. Reviews previous 24 hours for new orders and any other relevant data regarding student care plans.

  • Evaluates health needs of students and creates plans to meet those needs.

  • Schedules and assists with physical examinations performed in the Health Services Department.

  • Participate in prescribed medical regimen by preparing, assisting, and providing follow-up care to students undergoing diagnostic or therapeutic procedures.

  • Assists with medical care: medications, injections, food preparation, feeding problems, and personal hygiene.

  • Prepares daily census report.

  • Arranges clinic and/or doctor's appointments, as well as arranges transportation for students to hospital for tests or examinations. Provides follow-up on all clinic and Child Study Center recommendations.

  • Ensures student's continuing care needs through appropriate use of referrals.

  • Communicates with and transfers information to appropriate staff members regarding special needs or problems of students.

  • Completes physician's call sheet when/if they make rounds. Schedules those students who need to see physician.

  • Reviews records on prospective students for completion of immunization requirements, medical history, and pertinent evaluations.

  • Counsels or confers with individual students on referral or at student's request. Utilize services of community and ancillary resources for continuity of health care.

  • Responsible for maintaining accurate and complete student medical records as custodian of all medical records, in accordance with school policies governing confidentiality of student information.

  • Maintains accurate and up-to-date student medical records in electronic form

  • 3-at on WVEIS.

  • Responsible for ordering drugs, medical supplies, and other items utilized by this department.

  • Contacts families, or others, to implement and follow through with individual goals for health care.

  • Reviews all TB Questionnaires from new employees for risk factors. Refers staff members for x-rays, as necessary. Keeps accurate records of employees and students and reschedules as required.

  • Assists with bus driver physical examinations.

  • Inventories, orders, stocks, and records all medications and medical supplies in accordance with school policies, federal and state regulations.

  • Responsible for contacting and informing parents regarding indications for treatment, needs and evaluation of students.

  • Organizes and implements state-wide fluoride rinse program which involves ordering supplies and equipment from state, parental permission forms, weekly records, and end of the year report to state.

  • Attends general staff meetings as requested.

  • Provides or assists with staff professional development, in-services, and various health-related requirements for employment.

  • Provides for annual certification and recertification of staff for in CPR and First Aid required classes.

  • Maintains current RN licensure.

  • Other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must hold or be eligible for a license to practice as a registered nurse in West Virginia.

  • Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code §18-5-15c and/or §18A-3-10, as appropriate.

  • Knowledge of pediatric growth and development, family and group dynamics, and public health science including epidemiology and levels of prevention and wellness desirable.

  • Must have or acquire certification as Instructor for CPR, First Aid, as well as maintain/renew RN license as necessary.

COMPENSATION:

WVSDB Professional Salary Schedule, based upon degree level and applicable years of experience. 220-day contract inclusive of summer program. Supplemental Pay for on-call coverage applicable. Additional compensation is available for ASL proficiency as detailed in the WVSDB Communication Policy.
