The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University''s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Assistant, Head of School, the Registered Nurse (RN) will collaborate with the Division Heads to support the health and well-being of all students. The RN will serve as a liaison between teachers, students, family, community, and healthcare providers. The RN will assess student health, provide appropriate interventions, develop and execute plans for care management, act as a first responder when necessary, and engage in promotion of public health such as disease surveillance, immunization compliance, and health education. The RN will be responsible and accountable for management during the school day of chronic and acute illnesses, injuries occurring in the school setting and school events, follow up with students and their families as necessary, and recommendations for further care and monitoring as needed. The Registered Nurse will also work closely with The School's Medical Director and Social Worker.
Must be able to attend evening events and overnight trips.
Responsibilities
Student Health Care
- Provide assessment, first aid, triage, and nursing care for illnesses, injuries, and health concerns occurring during the school day.
- Refer children and families for further clinical evaluation and medical care follow-up.
- Determine appropriate interventions and communicate with parents/guardians regarding student health issues, in accordance with HIPPA or FERPA guidelines.
- Implement and monitor individualized health care plans and emergency action plans for students with chronic health conditions, including asthma, diabetes, seizure disorders, severe allergies, and other medical needs.
- Administer medications and treatments in accordance with physician orders, school policy, and applicable NYC and NYS regulations.
- Provide medical care and expertise during day and evening events, including overnight night trips, where medical response may be required.
- Support health and safety planning for field trips, school events, and overnight programs.
- Assist with communicable disease prevention, monitoring, and response efforts. Implement Public Health precautions per university directives.
- Maintain a safe and welcoming health office environment.
Health Records and Compliance
- Maintain accurate, confidential, and up-to-date student health records.
- Monitor compliance with New York State immunization requirements, health examination requirements, and applicable NYC and NYS Department of Health regulations.
- Collect, review, and track medical forms, immunization records, and physician documentation.
- Ensure appropriate documentation of all clinic visits, medication administration, and health incidents.
Emergency Preparedness and Safety
- Serve as a member of the school''s emergency response team.
- Coordinate and maintain emergency medical supplies, including first-aid kits, AEDs, and emergency medications.
- Assist in the development and implementation of school health, safety, and crisis response protocols.
- Respond to medical emergencies and coordinate care with emergency responders when necessary.
Health Education and Wellness
- Promote a culture of health, wellness, and preventive care within the school community.
- Serve as a resource to students, families, faculty, and staff on health and wellness topics.
- Collaborate with counselors, learning specialists, administrators, and educators to support student well-being.
- Participate in initiatives related to physical, emotional, and mental health.
Collaboration and Communication
- Partner with other Nurses in the Health Care Office.
- Consult with the Medical Director, as appropriate regarding difficult cases, public health concerns, and other issues.
- Maintain regular communication with families regarding student health concerns and accommodations.
- Collaborate with faculty and staff to support students'' health needs in classrooms, athletics, field trips, and extracurricular programs.
- Attend relevant student support, health, and safety meetings.
- Partner with school leadership on health-related policies and procedures. Proactively provide the Assistant Head of School with updates regarding pressing health issues.
- Performs additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires Current New York State RN License, Minimum 2 years of related medical experience required.
- Ability to make each child and child's family feel that health is a priority for The School.
- Successful candidates must possess the ability to guide families with wisdom, warmth and intelligence and the ability to work cooperatively with faculty, staff, parents, and students and hold high professional standards.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- A self-starter capable of working with minimal oversight to solve problems or complete projects.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience as a nurse working with children, specifically in K-8.
- Knowledge of Spanish.
- Master''s Degree.
