The OR Nurse works collaboratively with surgeons, anesthesia providers, and the surgical team to ensure optimal patient outcomes, compliance with regulatory standards, and adherence to best practices in infection control and patient safety. The nurse will use the nursing process as a framework to guide the delivery of high quality, individualized care to patients and their families. This process involves a series of steps that will help nurses assess patient needs, create appropriate nursing diagnosis, plan appropriate interventions, implement care, and evaluate the outcomes. The nursing process is essential for ensuring that patient care is effective and tailored to the individual needs of each patient. Essential Responsibilities: • Prepare the operating room with appropriate instruments, equipment, and supplies for scheduled procedures. • Verify patient identity, surgical site, and informed consent per established protocols. • Act as a circulating nurse and or scrub nurse, ensuring aseptic technique and maintaining a sterile environment. • Anticipate the needs of the surgical team to facilitate the safe and efficient progression of the case. • Administer medications and monitor patients’ responses under the direction of the surgeon and anesthesia provider. • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of intraoperative care, implants, and specimens and other components of medical record. • Provide safe patient positioning, padding, and transfer in coordination with the surgical team. • Ensure proper handling and disposition of surgical instruments, specimens, and biohazardous materials. • Support post-operative patient handoff to the recovery area with clear communication. • Participate in quality assurance, infection prevention, and performance improvement initiatives. • Adhere to all federal, state, and accrediting body regulations (CMS, AAAHC, The Joint Commission, etc.). Charge Nurse Responsibilities (as assigned): • Providing leadership and coordination of unit operations, • Supporting staff, • Facilitating patient flow, • Assisting with operational and clinical issues, and • Ensuring adherence to organizational policies and regulatory standards. Qualifications: Education: • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Bachelor’s degree in Nursing preferred Licensure: • Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice required. Experience: • At least one (1) year of operating room nursing experience; ambulatory surgery center experience preferred. • Knowledge of surgical instruments, sterile technique, and perioperative nursing standards of practice (AORN). • Strong critical thinking, organizational, and communication skills. Certifications: • Current BLS certification required. • Current ACLS certifications preferred. • PALS may be required based on the patient population. • CNOR Certification preferred. Physical Requirements: • Ability to stand for long periods and lift/move patients and equipment as needed. • Manual dexterity and visual acuity to operate instruments and assess patient conditions. • Exposure to bloodborne pathogens and surgical hazards with proper protective equipment.
