Registered Nurse (RN) - Lung Navigator/Care Coordinator

Early detection saves lives. When a lung nodule is found early and worked up promptly, a lung cancer can be caught at a stage when surgery offers the chance of a cure. Nodules are found through Lung Cancer Screening and as incidental findings on unrelated radiology exams. The RN Patient Navigator / Lung Nodule Coordinator makes sure none of them are missed. As the clinical point of contact for patients with lung nodules, the coordinator identifies and tracks nodules and keeps patients on schedule for screening, surveillance imaging, and diagnostic workup until a diagnosis is reached, working with patients, families, physicians, and the multidisciplinary lung nodule team to ensure timely, guideline-based care.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage the lung nodule tracking software daily: review nodules captured from lung cancer screening and incidental findings, and route them to the weekly multidisciplinary nodule conference.
• Maintain the tracking dashboard, notifying patients when their next screening or surveillance scan is due and tracking diagnostic testing through diagnosis.
• Coordinate diagnostic testing and, with the program nurse practitioner, facilitate referrals to pulmonology, thoracic surgery, oncology, radiology, and radiation oncology.
• Communicate each patient's nodule status and next steps, verbally and in writing, to patients, physicians, advanced practice providers, and the multidisciplinary team.
• Help patients understand their screening results and next steps.
• Serve as an education resource for staff and support community outreach, including health fairs, screenings, and symposiums.

Required Qualifications

• Current Louisiana RN license in good standing.
• American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• At least two years of related nursing experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in lung cancer screening, lung nodule management, oncology navigation, pulmonary care, or population health.
• Three to five years of nursing experience, ideally in oncology, pulmonary medicine, care coordination, or case management.
• Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) certification, or willingness to obtain it.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Strong care coordination, case management, and organizational skills.
• Ability to interpret imaging reports and apply evidence-based nodule surveillance guidelines (e.g., Lung-RADS, Fleischner).
• Ability to prioritize independently and manage a nodule tracking registry.
• Clear, compassionate communication with patients, families, physicians, and care teams.
• Skill in patient advocacy, education, and counseling.
• Ability to analyze clinical data, track outcomes, and support quality improvement.
