Major Responsibilities:

Educator

  • Demonstrates instructional expertise in the role of an Educator.

  • Assesses, develops, designs, coordinates, implements, and evaluates Educational Orientation and Training (EOT) programs and processes throughout AHN, providing clinicians’ perspectives and expertise as needed.

  • Utilizes adult learning principles congruent with the strategic goals of the organization.

  • Applies competency-based orientation system to facilitate the development of critical thinking skills, changes in practice, systems and structures, and acclimation of new employees to ensure cost-effective programs.

  • Initiates and applies new clinical education modalities based on expert knowledge and/or technical expertise.

  • Triages requests for educational offerings, provides additional information about upcoming offerings, informs clients of additional resources, and designs and implements educational programs to meet client needs.

  • Participates in monitoring of quality and appropriateness of educational programs and incorporates findings into practice.

  • Utilized varied educational methodologies and strategies to reduce the amount of time spent in a classroom setting.

  • Demonstrates accountability for designated educational activities within the NEPD.

  • Facilitates an empowering, professional environment that fosters learners’ participation in and ownership of educational activities.

  • Coordinates educational activities in a timely and organized manner to promote the organization's mission, vision, and values.

  • Maintains awareness of hospital/divisional/departmental procedure/policy changes, which affect the provision and quality of patient care and educational services.

Clinician/Practitioner

  • Functions in the capacity of Clinician/Practitioner to support nursing staff development.

  • Through collaboration with Clinical Lead educators, serves as a clinical education role model and resource for clinical practice throughout AHN.

  • Provides expert clinical knowledge by consulting on challenging, complex patients and/or patient populations.

  • Demonstrates a high degree of professional competence by applying scientific methods and advanced knowledge, skill, and expertise in nursing.

  • Applies the nursing process in clinical settings and role models expert patient care.

  • Assists nursing staff with goal attainment relative to maximizing patient health, including a focus on caring practices through educational activities and strategies.

  • Integrates clinical expertise when working one-on-one with novice to competent RNs and Clinical Leads.

  • Coordinates developments and revisions of clinical forms used for documentation.

Leader

  • Demonstrates advanced leadership skills pertinent to the role.

  • Demonstrates effective decision-making and is accountable to self and others.

  • Acts as a mentor to Clinical Lead educators and other developing clinical staff. 

Consultant/Change Agent

  • Functions as a Facilitator/Change Agent across clinical services.

  • Chairs/Facilitates and/or participates in designated Committees/Task Forces/Councils – including, but not limited to, Clinical Education Council, Code Blue Committee, Nurse Research Council, other Magnet Councils, etc., by acting as an expert resource, innovator, or facilitator.

  • Participates in at least 80% of council/departmental/designated meetings and is responsible for securing and reading minutes of meetings not attended.

  • Utilizes the nursing process to identify and correct clinical or training deficiencies noted during the performance of the regular duties of a given position.

  • Functions effectively as a clinical and educational consultant to coordinate and collaborate across the organization within the community.

  • Provides internal consultation to organizational leaders and providers regarding state-of-the-art educational methodologies and approaches.

  • Monitors and evaluates services provided and provides educational guidance as appropriate.

  • Serves on hospital, unit-based &/or departmental or divisional committees/task forces/teams.

Researcher

  • Applies the role of the Researcher to improve clinical practices and outcomes.

  • Incorporates traditional and innovative education and training research findings and trends in functional aspects of the role.

  • Uses processes of critical inquiry to contribute to nursing’s unique body of knowledge and improve clinical education practice by evaluating research findings for implementation into practice.

  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary team members in the development, implementation, and dissemination of research as appropriate.

  • Promotes awareness of evidence-based practices by incorporating research findings into educational offerings/programs and clinical practice.

  • Develops and/or revises policy and procedures based on research findings.

  • Participates in clinical benchmarking, organizational conferences, and literature reviews to provide up-to-date knowledge to the clinical staff.

  • Identifies appropriate customers, stakeholders, and internal/external resources.

Additional Functions/Expectations

Compliance with regulatory and accrediting agencies

  • Collaborates with Clinical Lead Educators and leadership to ensure compliance with hospital policies and procedures, Accreditation body standards, OSHA guidelines, regulatory agency requirements, and standards of care/practice.

Collaboration

  • Collaborates with management in developing professional development plans, assessments, evaluations of staff performance, need for continued education, career counseling, focused interventions, and learning contracts.

  • Promotes organizational collaboration utilizing change management principles, problem-solving, and negotiation for win/win clinical and organizational outcomes.

  • Collaborates internally and externally to assess and identify the educational needs of clinical nursing and nursing management and in the development and implementation of plans which address those needs.

  • Fosters collaborative relationships across the organization and with clinical affiliates and internal/external customers in attaining mutual goals of patient advocacy and professional practice.

  • Collaborates with Quality and Safety/Risk Management to promote awareness of the PI model and incorporate findings into educational programs.

  • Works closely with other Clinical Nurse Educators/Nurse Educator Specialist/Clinical Nurse Specialists and other educators to support EOT and competency processes.

Communication

  • Utilizes effective communication skills to include active listening, assertiveness, tact, diplomacy, and non-judgmental demeanor to promote diversity and convey respect and appreciation of others.

  • Provides staff with appropriate and timely constructive feedback when necessary.

  • Demonstrates effective communication by giving and accepting constructive feedback receptively to different ideas and opinions and respects sensitive or confidential information.

  • Provides status reports and follow-up to appropriate parties as needed.

  • Communicates effectively with various-sized groups of people utilizing appropriate presentation methods and public speaking skills.

  • Communicates learner performance/behavior gaps to managers/directors when necessary.

  • Applies effective communication skills to interface with multiple skills/education levels (e.g., technicians, clinical staff, professionals/non-professionals, community, students, etc.)

Demonstrates Self-Growth as a Professional Nurse

  • Demonstrates self-growth as a Nurse Educator Specialist by demonstrating accountability for personal continuing education and self-learning needs by attending conferences, seminars, care planning rounds, researching topics of interest, and reading professional journals.

  • Maintains current certification(s) related to clinical or educational specialty.

  • Maintains awareness of current professional trends.

  • Establishes effective networking relationships with other educators/clinicians to enhance their role.

Certification Required:

  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Georgia. 

  • Professional certification in clinical or education specialty.

  • BLS required. Advanced Life Support is preferred.

Education Required:

  • ​​Must be High School Diploma or GED Diploma graduate. Must have a master’s degree in nursing.

  • Must attend mandatory hospital and departmental annual training. 

Work Experience Required:

  • ​​Minimum of four years of clinical nursing experience in an acute care institution.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • Knowledge of current educational principles, teaching modalities, performance consultation, risk management, facilitation, and group dynamics. 

  • Understanding of competency-based education, licensure, and regulatory requirements. 

  • Must have excellent presentation skills.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to use visual acuity to see monitor screen, computer, and hard copy materials. 

  • Must be able to hear and verbally communicate in person and over the phone or radio.

  • Must be able to sit or stand for prolonged time periods (up to 2 hours). 

  • Must be able to comprehend and learn the operation of various office equipment.

  • Must have a functional range of motion of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spines, upper and lower extremities with a grip strength of 50-60# specific to job evaluation.

  • Must be able to forward reach, overhead reach, bend, squat, kneel, and apply proper body mechanics during the transfers and transport of supplies and/or equipment using proper body mechanics.

  • Must be able to life a minimum of 10 pounds specific to job evaluation.

  • Must be able to push/pull a cart carrying 25 pounds or more.
