Registered Nurse (RN) – PCU / Stepdown / Telemetry

Location: Potsdam, NY

Contract Length: 13 Weeks

Shift: Mixed Acuity Unit (PCU / MS Tele / Med-Surg)

Job Summary

The Registered Nurse (RN) provides high-quality, patient-centered care in a mixed acuity unit including PCU, stepdown, telemetry, and medical-surgical patients. This role requires strong critical thinking skills and the ability to manage varying levels of patient acuity, including cardiac monitoring, post-surgical care, and complex medical conditions.

Required Qualifications

  • Active New York State RN License required (must be in hand; no exceptions)
  • Current BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications required
  • Minimum 1 year recent nursing experience required
  • PCU / IMC / Stepdown experience within the last 3 years required
  • EPIC EMR experience preferred
  • Strong telemetry and cardiac monitoring experience required
  • Ability to manage high-acuity mixed patient assignments

Required Clinical Skills

  • Cardiac rhythm interpretation and dysrhythmia management
  • Post-MI and cardiac monitoring care
  • IV insulin protocols and insulin drip management
  • Heparin protocol management
  • Titration of cardiac drips (non-complex titration per protocol)
  • Blood product administration
  • Central line, PICC line, and port management
  • Phlebotomy and peripheral IV insertion
  • Feeding tube care and management
  • Continuous bladder irrigation
  • Chest tube management (Pleur-evac / Emerson systems)
  • Wound care and wound vac management
  • CVA, seizure, trauma, and post-operative care
  • Respiratory support: HFNC, CPAP/BiPAP, oxygen therapy
  • Tracheostomy care and suctioning
  • Isolation precautions and infection control

Patient Population

  • Medical-surgical overflow
  • Telemetry and cardiac patients
  • Post-operative surgical patients (ortho, general, trauma, ENT)
  • Rare pediatric overflow cases (experienced travelers only)

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive nursing care in a mixed acuity PCU environment
  • Monitor telemetry and respond to cardiac rhythm changes
  • Administer and titrate IV medications per protocol
  • Perform assessments, documentation, and care coordination
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare teams
  • Manage post-surgical and complex medical patients
  • Ensure safe medication administration using EPIC and Pyxis systems
