The Louisiana State Penitentiary is currently seeking qualified applicants for the position of Registered Nurse Supervisor B, a key leadership role within the institution's medical department. This position plays a critical role in ensuring the delivery of quality healthcare services within a correctional environment while supervising nursing staff and maintaining compliance with medical policies, procedures, and professional standards.

The Registered Nurse Supervisor B will be responsible for supervising and coordinating the daily activities of nursing staff, ensuring adequate staffing coverage, reviewing medical documentation, and assisting in the implementation of medical policies and procedures. The incumbent will work closely with physicians, medical staff, security personnel, and administration to ensure that healthcare services are delivered safely, efficiently, and in accordance with departmental regulations and professional nursing standards.

This position requires strong leadership, sound clinical judgment, and the ability to work in a structured and secure environment. The Registered Nurse Supervisor B will also assist in training and mentoring nursing staff, monitoring performance, ensuring proper documentation and medication administration practices, and responding to medical situations that arise within the facility.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a current Louisiana Registered Nurse license or a temporary permit or multi-state license issued by a Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC/eNLC) state to practice as a registered nurse plus one of the following:

Four years of experience as a licensed registered nurse; OR

A bachelors degree in nursing plus three years of experience as a licensed registered nurse; OR

A masters degree in nursing or public health plus three years of experience as a licensed registered nurse; OR

A doctorate in nursing or public health plus two years of experience as a licensed registered nurse.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:

  • Supervise Registered Nurses of a lower level, Licensed Practical Nurses, paraprofessional personnel, and inmate workers. Serve as a resource person for assigned staff. Provide clinical support to assigned staff for complex procedures and equipment. Assign duties to assigned staff based on assessed competence, licensure, and Louisiana State Board of Nursing guidelines.
  • Coordinate patient activities (i.e. admissions, discharges, transfers, test/procedures, scheduling, etc.) in an efficient effective manner.
  • Have knowledge of and assure hospice policies, procedures, and licensing standards are adhered to. Make rounds on Nursing Units I & II to assure staff adherence to policy and procedure as well as standards of the nursing profession and make recommendations and changes as needed. Receive calls regarding staff absences, tardiness, reports, and documents these appropriately.

Position-Specific Details:

Appointment Type: Promotion of a permanent, classified employee of LA DPS&C - CORRECTIONS SERVICES (Adult DOC)

  • The selected employee may be required to serve a trial detail prior to being permanently promoted or may be required to accept a probational appointment.

Compensation: This position has a Special Entrance Rate (SER) of $41.86 per hour.

This position also offers premium pay: A rate of $5.00 per hour for each hour worked, in addition to regular pay.
