Registered Nurse - Wound Ostomy Continence (WOC) - RN

Location: Gonda Building

This particular position will focus on working with wound care (pressure ulcers, skin tears, mucous membranes, friction injuries, etc) on the inpatient units.  

The WOC nurse's focus is the quality of care provided for individuals with altered skin integrity, wounds, ostomies, fistulas, and incontinence. Facilitates the rehabilitation and health maintenance of these individuals and their families through assessment of needs, education, counseling, and coordination of care. Working collaboratively with other health care professionals, the WOC nurse functions in the roles of care provider, educator and consultant in a variety of settings throughout the medical center. Through leadership, education, and management responsibilities, the WOC nurse strives to further the clinical specialty.   

• Reports to Ambulatory Nurse Manager. 
• Works cooperatively with and provides consultation for many disciplines throughout Mayo Clinic related to the wound ostomy continence clinical specialty. 
• Functions as a liaison between the consumer, community, and professional organizations related to the clinical specialty.

The Wound Ostomy Nurse (WON) provides expert, integrated, cost-effective quality patient care through the coordination of clinical care for high-risk patients with complex issues across the continuum of care settings. This nurse integrates knowledge of advanced pathophysiology, human responses to health problems and non-disease based etiologies to assess, plan and coordinate care, monitor and evaluate patient outcomes. The WON supports professional nursing practice across practice settings and across the continuum of care to meet the needs of the patient and family. Working collaboratively with other health care professionals, the WON functions in the roles of care provider, educator and consultant in a variety of settings throughout the medical center. The WON will function within the Mayo Clinic Nursing Professional Practice Model, which includes accountability for planning, implementing, evaluating and communicating all phases of nursing care for assigned patients. The WON provides leadership through activities such as preceptor role, informal and formal leadership roles, and quality improvement efforts. The WON possesses excellent communication skills; is skillful in mentoring and teaching; and participates on committees or projects. The ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice and the Scope and Standards for Wound, Ostomy and Continence Specialty Practice Nursing provide a basis for the practice of the WON.

This role is eligible for TN sponsorship. Successful sponsorship will require state licensure and completion of the VisaScreen or equivalent certification.

Graduate of a baccalaureate Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accredited nursing program. If graduation did not occur within the last two years, one year of RN experience in an applicable care setting or one year of current LPN experience at Mayo Clinic is required. 

Additional Qualifications: 

One year of professional RN experience required. BSN Required, Pediatric/Neonatal experience preferred.   Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing (CWOCN) Certification preferred (required within 24 months in position.  If not currently practicing as a WOC RN, at least one year successful work experience in medical-surgical nursing within the past five years required.  Demonstrates advanced clinical knowledge and competence in specialty area. Ability to collect, compare, sort, and prioritize information to be used in the decision-making process for patients and staff. Ability to manage stress and complex problem-solving issues. Ability to be self-directed. Demonstrates strong written and verbal communication skills.

Internal applicants are required to attach their three most recent performance appraisals.

License and Certification (Must obtain prior to start date):

Current RN license by applicable state requirements. 

Maintains current Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers from one of the following programs: American Heart Association; American Red Cross. 

WON Certification within 24 months employment in the position. Additional state licensure(s) and/or specialty certification/training as required by the work area.
