Job Summary and Qualifications

Performs sleep studies according to established policies and procedures, ensuring accurate data collection, scoring, and patient care within the Sleep/Wake Center. The Registered Polysomnographer will also educate patients and assist home care personnel with CPAP setup and use


  • Perform sleep studies as per physician orders, including home sleep studies. 
  • Score sleep stages, sleep apnea, hypopnea, periodic limb movements, and recognize EEG and EKG abnormalities and artifacts. 
  • Apply and adjust CPAP according to procedure manual. 
  • Respond to medical emergencies during sleep studies. 
  • Maintain and calibrate sleep monitoring equipment. 
  • Perform sleep studies as per order of physicians. Knowledge of home sleep study, how to instruct, demonstrate, and apply to patient when needed. 
  • Score sleep stages, sleep apnea, hypopnea, periodic limb movements and recognizes certain EEG and EKG abnormalities and artifacts. 
  • Applies and adjusts CPAP according to procedure manual. 
  • Responds appropriately to medical emergencies that may arise during sleep studies. 
  • Calibrates and maintains all equipment necessary for sleep monitoring including pulse oximeter, monitor and defibrillator. 
  • Develops and continues to improve communication with all physicians involved in ordering or interpreting tests. 
  • Interviews patient and documents pertinent data for sleep study report. Take and documents blood pressure pre and post sleep study. Knows emergency criteria as stated in policy and procedure manual, when to contact the physician. 
  • Maintains accurate record of sleep studies and results according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) standards. 
  • Reads and reviews current literature and changes in sleep research with sleep lab personnel. 
  • Networks with other sleep disorder centers to develop a resource pool generating current practices and pathways for problem solving. 
  • Educates patient and assists home care personnel with CPAP set up and use. 
  • Deliver patient care appropriate to the demographics and specific needs of the patient population. 
  •  Assess, respond, and adapt treatment of care to meet patient needs. 
  • Promote a cooperative, collaborative work environment. 
  • Identify and take action in own learning needs. 
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of indications, contradictions, and limitations of testing.

What qualifications you will need:

  • Associate’s degreePreferred 

  • <1 year polysomnographer experience 

  • Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) Required 

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Required 30 days
