Overview:

The Sleep Center Registered Polysomnographic Technologist at Riverside Healthcare is responsible for conducting and interpreting polysomnographic studies to diagnose sleep disorders. This role involves operating specialized equipment, performing detailed sleep studies, and providing high-quality patient care. The technician will work closely with sleep physicians and other healthcare professionals to ensure accurate diagnostic results and effective patient management.

 

Work Location: Riverside Medical Group - Sleep Lab

FTE & Shift: 0.9 FTE (Full-Time) | 36 hrs/wk

Essential Duties

  • Conduct Sleep Studies: Perform and manage polysomnographic studies including overnight polysomnography, home sleep apnea testing, and other sleep studies. Monitor and record physiological data during sleep studies to ensure accurate results.
  • Equipment Operation: Set up, calibrate, and operate polysomnographic equipment. Ensure the equipment is functioning correctly and make adjustments as needed.
  • Patient Preparation and Monitoring: Prepare patients for sleep studies by applying electrodes, sensors, and other monitoring devices according to established protocols. Monitor patients throughout the study, ensuring their comfort and addressing any issues that arise.
  • Data Collection and Analysis: Accurately collect and record sleep data, including sleep stages, respiratory events, and other physiological parameters. Analyze data to identify sleep disorders and abnormalities.
  • Documentation: Document patient information, study results, and any issues encountered during the study. Prepare comprehensive reports for review by sleep physicians.
  • Patient Interaction: Provide clear instructions and education to patients regarding sleep studies, including preparation, procedure, and post-study care. Address patient concerns and ensure a positive experience.
  • Quality Assurance: Follow established protocols and standards for sleep studies, including adherence to American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) guidelines. Ensure that all procedures are performed in compliance with regulatory and safety standards.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with sleep physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to interpret results and develop patient care plans. Assist in the development and implementation of quality improvement initiatives.
  • Technical Support: Troubleshoot and resolve equipment issues as they arise. Provide technical support and guidance to less experienced staff as needed.
  • Demonstrates flexibility with assignments within professional scope/duties/licensure.

Responsibilities:

Preferred Experience

Experience:

  • Prior experience in performing polysomnographic studies or working in a sleep center is preferred.
  • Experience with a variety of polysomnographic equipment and software.

Skills:

  • Strong technical skills and proficiency in operating polysomnographic equipment.
  • Excellent patient care skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with patients and healthcare team members.
  • Detail-oriented with strong analytical skills for data collection and analysis.
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Familiarity with AASM guidelines and standards for sleep studies.

Required Licensure/Education

  • High School diploma or GED required
  • Certification as a Registered Polysomnographic Technician (RPSGT) or equivalent is required.
  • Current CPR or BLS certification.

Preferred Education

  • An Associates degree in Polysomnography or a related field is preferred.

  • Chemicals: Acetone, Benzoin, isopropyl rubbing alcohol, Elefix, Nuprep, asepti-soak, germicidal disposable wipes. Refer to MSDS Sheets

  • Blood and Body Fluids: The patient may cough and expectorate mucus and may be exposed to urine and other body fluids - by assisting patients to restroom. 
  • TB or Airborne Pathogens: The testing is sometimes dones to see if patient has or had TB.

  • Speech: For proper instruction of patient 
  • Vision: For observing the procedure being correctly performed and monitoring equipment. 
  • Smell: Helpful to note presence of electrical/fire safety. 
  • Hearing: Needed to listen for problems with patient (for instance, leaks of airflow around the mouthpiece.) 
  • Touch: Applying mouthpieces, masks; typing on computer, turning on gas tanks.
