What You'll Do

As a Registered Respiratory Therapist in Children's Services, you'll provide advanced respiratory care for neonatal and pediatric patients while serving as a trusted clinical resource to physicians, nurses, patients, and families.

Clinical Excellence

  • Deliver respiratory care treatments and therapies according to physician orders.
  • Assess, monitor, and respond to changing patient conditions.
  • Assist physicians with diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
  • Develop, implement, and update patient care plans.
  • Educate patients and caregivers on respiratory treatments and care plans.
  • Apply critical thinking and clinical judgment in both routine and complex situations.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential documentation.
  • Stay current with neonatal and pediatric respiratory care best practices.

Team Collaboration

  • Participate in physician rounds and interdisciplinary care planning.
  • Serve as a preceptor and resource for fellow team members.
  • Communicate patient goals, progress, and care updates effectively.
  • Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and healthcare professionals to optimize patient outcomes.
  • Help resolve patient care, equipment, and workflow challenges.

Safety & Quality Focus

  • Ensure safe medication administration and infection prevention practices.
  • Follow patient safety protocols, including patient identification, communication handoffs, and time-out procedures.
  • Support regulatory compliance, patient rights, and confidentiality standards.
  • Contribute to quality improvement initiatives and departmental programs.

Equipment & Technology

  • Operate and maintain respiratory care equipment.
  • Process equipment, manage supplies, and replace oxygen tanks as needed.
  • Assist in evaluating new equipment, products, and clinical procedures.

Qualifications

Required

  • Graduate of a CoARC-accredited Respiratory Care Program
  • Current Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) license meeting state requirements
  • Current Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential through the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC)
  • Ability to lift, push, pull, and grip up to 50 pounds

Preferred

  • Critical care experience
  • ACLS certification
  • PALS certification for therapists working in the Emergency Department

Our Mercy health system was founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1986. But our heritage goes back more than 185 years. It began with an Irish woman named Catherine McAuley, who wanted to help the poor women and children of Dublin. Though Catherine had a modest upbringing, she received an unexpected inheritance that allowed her to fulfill her dreams. In 1827, she opened the first House of Mercy in Dublin, intending to teach skills to poor women and educate children. Many volunteers came to help. A few years later, Catherine founded the Sisters of Mercy, the first religious order not bound to the rules of the cloister, whose Sisters were free to walk among the poor and visit them in their homes. By the time Catherine died in 1841, there were convents in Ireland and England, and in 1843, the Sisters of Mercy came to the United States. In 1871, they traveled to St. Louis and from there throughout the Midwest, beginning what would, today be known as Mercy.
