Job Description:

The Registered Respiratory Therapist- Hyperbaric is responsible for providing clinical care, expertise, consultation, education and research to their designated area or specialty focus. Serves as a change agent; accepts and facilitates change. They are proactive and will assume a clinical leadership position.

Posting Specifics 

  • Shift Details: PRN, 1 shift/week, M-F 7:00am-5:00pm After hours call requirements 2-3 days per pay period.

  • Department: Hyperbaric and Wound Care, LDS Hospital & Intermountain Medical Center

  • Additional Details:No new grads. The position requires a minimum of 3 years of critical care experience and preferably a BS degree

Essential Functions

  • Provides hyperbaric treatment for both outpatient and critically ill patients.
  • Performs respiratory and hyperbaric procedures in response to patients' needs and physician orders within the Scope of Practice and established guidelines.
  • Independently operates hyperbaric chambers, ventilators, and other related equipment. 
  • Carefully monitors patient clinical status, equipment, respiratory status for duration of treatments to ensure patient and caregiver safety.
  • Communicates the patient care plan effectively to the patient, family, physician, nursing, support staff and others while maintaining a team focus.
  • Maintains timely, accurate records and documentation to satisfy department, hospital, regulatory, and legal requirements.
  • Maintain all appropriate training, skills, and expertise to operate hyperbaric specific equipment.
  • Promotes the profession of Respiratory Care and Hyperbaric Medicine, participates in quality improvement and research activities.
  • Fulfills on-call and day shift schedule department requirements including weekends, on call and after-hours work.
  • Provides clinical expertise in the specialty area to identify evidence based best practice initiatives and processes and monitors outcomes.
  • Develops and implements department or specialty care area projects or programs as identified.
  • Ensures and initiates standardization and development of department protocols, policies, and procedures for patient care delivery.
  • Acts as a resource, consultant, and mentor to staff within department or specialty care area.
  • Utilizes current research to improve hyperbaric respiratory practice and to guide the development of standards for respiratory care of specialty patients

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current state license to practice as a Registered Respiratory Therapist.
  • Valid/active NBRC credential
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for healthcare providers.
  • Specific certifications as required (i.e. PALS, ACLS, NRP)
  • 3 years of critical care respiratory experience and experience with transport and/or MRI ventilator.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in respiratory therapy (degree will be verified).
  • Leadership experience
  • Certified Hyperbaric Technician or Certified Hyperbaric Specialist

  • Must be able to work in a compressed gas environment.
  • Ongoing need for employees to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.
  • Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.
  • Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.
  • Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.
  • Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc.)
  • May be expected to stand in a stationary position for a long time.
