Department Summary

Risk Management Services' programs provide proactive support for the strategic, operational and financial foundation of the University of North Texas. A safe academic environment is the top priority of our department and staff members. We help identify, analyze and mitigate risks so that the UNT community can freely pursue opportunities for growth and advancement. Our staff members also work to identify, protect and conserve university resources from loss. To achieve our goals, we work together with the UNT community to help them proactively manage risks, implement preventative measures, plan for their challenges and work through any issues that occur.

Position Overview

This position is responsible for combining professional judgment and technical expertise to support the Occupational Safety Program Manager with identifying, analyzing and controlling hazards to ensure the health safety of students, faculty, staff and visitors on the UNT campus. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, food safety, indoor air quality monitoring and compliance issues, occupational noise and ergonomic evaluations, respirator fit testing, document safety findings, recommend corrective actions, develop training programs, support the asbestos management program, and other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Occupational Health, or other Health Science field and 4 years of associated experience in public health/public medicine/programs/food safety. Licensed Registered Sanitarian (RS) in the State of Texas within one year of hire. Employees in this job may be responsible for conducting research on, working on, or having the ability to access critical organizational infrastructure and they must be able to maintain the security and integrity of the infrastructure related to this role.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of food safety, occupational safety, and basic industrial hygiene principles.

Ability to interpret and apply applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.

Ability to conduct inspections, investigations, exposure assessments, and corrective-action follow-up.

Skill in operating, calibrating, and maintaining environmental and industrial hygiene monitoring equipment.

Strong oral and written communication skills.

Ability to analyze data, substantiate findings using spreadsheets and other analytical tools, and prepare clear reports, procedures, training materials, and recommendations.

Working knowledge of building construction and layout and ability to read blueprints, schematic drawings, etc. and determine sites for inspection.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Occupational Safety or equivalent field and 2 years’ experience in Public Health and occupational safety practices involving federal, state, city, and external entities. Substitution of education for experience allowed. Must have or obtain upon employment a current Texas Registered Sanitarian License.

Required License/Registration/Certifications

Must have or obtain within six months of employment current Texas Registered Sanitarian License

Job Duties

  • Monitors compliance of federal and state regulations by performing food safety inspections of campus cafeterias, coffee vendors, food courts and concessions for UNT and creates and sustains database for food facility inspection results. Notifies UNT food establishment of new regulations, food recalls, and other pertinent information and reports all violations to appropriate personnel and assures corrective actions are completed. Implement training presentations for food safety, health concerns and workstation ergonomics. Collaborates to develop, review, and updates University food safety policies and standard operating procedures with internal stakeholders. 
  • Provides oversight, consultation and inspection of all food related temporary events and third-party vendors scheduled on campus to assure food safety guidelines are met and encourages safe food handling by providing guidance and consultation to the UNT community on safe food handling techniques for bake sales, potlucks, and tailgating. 
  • Conducts indoor air quality/mold assessments proactively and in response to employee and student concerns. Conducts HVAC system inspections, as needed, of campus buildings. Provides written documentation of indoor air quality responses. 
  • Conducts occupational noise monitoring, ergonomic evaluations, respirator fit testing, and other industrial hygiene assessments. Operates, calibrates, and maintains monitoring, sampling, and analytical equipment and coordinates manufacturer-recommended calibration, repair, and replacement. Assist in processing Confined Space and High Work permitting for internal and external workers. 
  • Utilizes a variety of industrial hygiene monitoring, sampling and analytical equipment and instruments. Performs calibration and routine testing and ensures instruments have recommended O&M, annual manufacture calibrations, and needed repairs. 
  • Support UNT’s asbestos management program through recordkeeping, project coordination, inspections, and other assigned activities within the employee’s training and qualifications. 
  • Supports UNT Risk Management’s overall scope of operation. Represent RMS on various committees / projects. 
  • Assist with implementation and oversight of UNT’s safety program. Ensures compliance with policies and procedures. Collaborates with UNT Facilities and UNT System Facilities personnel and manages partnerships among RMS, multiple campus departments, and external agencies to enhance UNT’s industrial hygiene program.
