JOB SUMMARY


The Registration Clerk is responsible for registering patients for emergency, inpatient, and outpatient services according to policy and procedure established by the hospital as well as verifying all insurance coverage and benefits.  Serves as the first point of contact for patients presenting to the facility for service.  Must professionally and courteously collect monies due to facility. 
 
JOB QUALIFICATIONS 

Education:  High school graduate or GED preferred.  One or two years of college preferred. 
 
Experience:  One-year experience in a hospital setting with public contact work preferred. Knowledge of Medical Terminology preferred.   
 
Licenses/Certificates: None 
 
Skills: Proficient with computers and excellent customer service skills. 
 
General Responsibilities: 
1.  Gathers accurate demographic and financial information on Inpatient/Outpatient registration. 
2.  Prepares patient ID cards, wrist bands, patient folders, and appropriate forms. 
3.  Collects admission deposits, copays and deductibles. 
4.  Directs patients to the appropriate inpatient department. 
5.  Distributes appropriate forms to ancillary departments. 
6.  Monitors diagnostic tests ordered by physicians for Medical necessity according to government guidelines. 
7.  Verifies patient’s insurance coverage/benefits and documents information in the AS400. 
8.  Notifies the Business Office of Self-pay patients and UR Department of Insurance coverage issues.

Registers patients for all services with less than a 5% error rate according to policies and procedures established by the hospital. 
 
Complies with EMTALA regulations with 100% accuracy. 


Shares in other ER duties such as completing inpatient admissions, registering newborns, and outpatient registrations 
 
Collects monies due from the patient including balances from previous visits and issues a cash receipt as necessary. Meets established POS goals. Documents appropriate POS Comment Code 100% 
  
Accurately utilizes/demonstrates the use of Order Facilitator for retrieving outpatient orders (after hours) 
 
Ensures that all appropriate insurance/demographic information is properly scanned into Cerner CPDI on all accts. 
 
Answers and appropriately handles incoming calls from patients, other departments and physician offices. 
 
Accurately completes MSP forms for all necessary accounts. 
 
Understands and can accurately demonstrate how to total and balance daily cash journal at the end of each shift. 

Ensures that all patient registration packets are updated in a timely manner and any outstanding charts are relayed to oncoming shift.  Obtains copies of the necessary identifying information from patient (photo id and ins card) 

Registers patients as necessary for outpatient services after hours and/or on weekends with minimal errors.  Less than 5 returned accts from Medical Records needing additional information 
 
Readily implements procedures of the hospital’s various emergency plans (i.e fire, disaster, and bomb threat) 
 
Verifies Worker’s comp claims for appropriate authorization and billing address. 
 
Provides a positive and professional image to the public for the hospital and department when greeting and assisting both internal and external customers. 
 
Successfully registers patients by following the established look-up procedures to ensure duplicate medical records are not created.   
 
Utilizes all tools available to assist in verifying patient insurance information. Understands the eCare system used and properly selects and documents the account accordingly. 


Understands charge estimator and completes a charge estimator when applicable
