RELATED SERVICE COUNSELING OPENING for 2026 - 2027 School Year

Cooperative School Services is based in Rensselaer, Indiana, and serves nine school corporations (Benton Community, Frontier, Kankakee Valley, North Newton, North White, Rensselaer Central, South Newton, Tri-County and West Central). The position covers multiple school buildings and requires a personal vehicle for travel with mileage reimbursement. The school corporations for this position are: North Newton and Kankakee Valley.

Position: Related Services Counselor, providing counseling and support services to students with disabilities so that they may benefit from their special education services. This includes but is not limited to students identified as having Emotional Disabilities, Other Health Impairments, or students who are on the Autism Spectrum.

Terms of Employment: 185 School Days (Generally early August - late May)/ 7.5 hours per day, Non-Certified School Contract. Salary and benefits commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Start date: On or about August 11, 2026

End Date: On or about May 28, 2027, anticipate 185 days

Age ranges of students: Preschool - Elementary - High School

Other: Position requires driving to schools and other destinations, and use of a personal vehicle for travel with mileage reimbursement.

Qualifications:

  1. Degree in education, sociology, psychology, or a related field

  2. Experience with children with disabilities and their families

  3. Effective spoken and written communication skills

  4. Ability to effectively work as a team member either as a leader or as a participant

  5. Willingness to accept direction and ability to effectively complete assigned tasks on time

  6. Positive work history for punctuality, time management and collegiality

  7. Knowledge of community resources to assist individuals with disabilities

  8. Knowledge of special education laws and regulations

Responsibilities:

  1. Provide counseling as a related service consistent with IEPs to individual students or groups of students

  2. Attend and provide input to case conference committee meetings for IEP development and service delivery

  3. Maintain a log of activities

  4. Maintain contact with and provide support for parents of students receiving counseling services and support services

  5. Serve as a member of the multidisciplinary team for students undergoing evaluation, as assigned and as appropriate

  6. Assist in the planning and conducting of Functional Behavior Assessments

  7. Assist in the development, implementation and monitoring of Behavior Intervention Plans

  8. Maintain data on student progress on BIPs, in counseling sessions and other intervention plans

  9. Serve as a resource for students, parents, and school personnel in removing barriers to educational progress and developing alternatives and support systems

  10. Provide training on pertinent topics for school personnel and family members

  11. Attend and participate in training on pertinent topics

  12. Build a rapport with social service and mental health representatives and collaborate with them to provide services for students

  13. Provide crisis intervention with students as needed or requested

  14. Report to the Director of Special Education regarding any concerns or issues that need to be addressed

  15. Other responsibilities as deemed necessary by the Director of Special Education
