Job Summary:
The Relief Truck Driver will transport goods between the distribution center and various grocery stores. The Relief Truck Driver will ensure timely and safe delivery while adhering to all traffic and company regulations.
Essential Functions of the Position:
- Safely operate a commercial motor vehicle to transport goods between the distribution center and grocery stores.
- Adhere to all federal, state, and local driving regulations, as well as company policies and procedures.
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the vehicle, reporting any mechanical issues or concerns to the maintenance team.
- Assist with the loading and unloading of goods using appropriate equipment, ensuring all items are handled safely and securely.
- Accurately maintain driver logs, trip reports, and other necessary documentation.
- Provide excellent customer service when interacting with store personnel and other company representatives.
- Follow all safety protocols and procedures to ensure a safe work environment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge:
- In-depth understanding of federal, state, and local transportation regulations, including DOT rules and regulations.
- Basic knowledge of vehicle maintenance and the ability to perform minor repairs and inspections.
- Strong awareness of safety protocols and the ability to identify and mitigate potential hazards.
Skills:
- Proficient in operating and maneuvering commercial vehicles safely under various driving conditions.
- Effective use of powered industrial equipment (i.e. pallet jack) for the purpose of loading/unloading goods.
- Excellent time management skills to ensure timely deliveries and adherence to schedules.
- Skill in maintaining accurate and detailed logs, trip reports, and other required documentation.
- High level of attention to detail to ensure accuracy in deliveries and adherence to regulations.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Competence in using GPS and other navigation tools.
- Basic computer skills for maintaining delivery records and communication.
Abilities:
- Ability to plan efficient delivery routes, including adjusting for traffic, weather, and other variables.
- Ability to interact professionally and courteously with customers and store personnel.
- Ability to handle the physical demands of the job, including loading and unloading goods and long hours of driving.
- Capacity to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Flexibility to adapt to changing delivery schedules and routes as needed.
- Dexterity to accommodate changing work schedules, with willingness to work weekends and holidays on a routine basis.
Physical Requirements:
- Lift and carry items up to 25 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally.
- Perform repetitive motions such as sitting, walking, reaching, bending, stooping, squatting, and handling packages.
- Maintain clear communication with team members.
- Move quickly and efficiently to manage workload.
- Maintain physical stamina to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to perform tasks that require fine motor skills, such as using tools or handling small objects.
Work Conditions:
- Work Hours: Ability to work flexible hours, routinely consisting of weekends and holidays; varying work schedules (ex. one week of a.m. shift, followed by one week of pm shift, etc.), to accommodate changing business needs and coverage of sick calls/employee leaves.
- Environment: Indoor and outdoor exposure to various temperatures, dust, noise, and moving machinery.
- Primary Work Stations: Primarily work within the main areas of responsibility, including warehouse, office, and common areas.
- Dress Code: Durable, comfortable clothing, such as work pants and a work shirt. A strong focus on maintaining a safe environment for employees and self. Adherence to health and safety guidelines is paramount, including wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
- Exposure: May be exposed to moving mechanical parts and cleaning chemicals.
- Noise Level: Usually low to moderate, with occasional loud periods from equipment and tools.
- Interaction: Constant interaction with team members in a fast-paced retail environment.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience driving a commercial vehicle, preferably in a similar role.
- Must hold a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a clean driving record.
