Job Description

The Estimating Engineer develops high-level budgets and detailed Class 3-4 line-item cost estimates for large-scale manufacturing, warehousing, facility, and capital improvement projects. This role analyzes complex engineering documentation, applies multi-disciplinary engineering knowledge, and leverages modern estimating and project management tools to produce accurate, comprehensive estimates for projects consistently exceeding $20M in value. The position offers the opportunity to work with an exceptional in-house team, support major industrial and commercial projects, and operate in a primarily remote capacity with periodic travel.

Responsibilities

  • Develop high-level budgets and detailed Class 3-4 line-item cost estimates for manufacturing, warehousing, facility, and capital improvement projects, typically exceeding $20M in value.
  • Analyze engineering drawings, specifications, P&IDs, and project documentation to determine required materials, labor, equipment, subcontractor involvement, and overhead costs.
  • Perform detailed quantity take-offs and cost breakdowns using CSI/MasterFormat divisions to ensure comprehensive and accurate estimates.
  • Apply knowledge across multiple engineering disciplines, including mechanical, electrical, civil/structural, process, filling and packaging, and chemical manufacturing, to inform cost and constructability assessments.
  • Develop clear, detailed Scope of Work documents that define project deliverables, boundaries, and responsibilities for all stakeholders.
  • Review, evaluate, and approve vendor and contractor bid packages to ensure alignment with project scope, budget, and technical requirements.
  • Utilize estimating and preconstruction software tools such as ProEst and Procore, as well as RS Means, to prepare, benchmark, and validate cost estimates.
  • Use AutoCAD and other design documentation to support quantity take-offs, constructability reviews, and cost analysis.
  • Leverage productivity and project management tools including Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Project to build estimate models, reports, and schedules.
  • Collaborate with project teams, engineers, and stakeholders to clarify design intent, resolve discrepancies, and refine estimates throughout the preconstruction process.
  • Participate in jobsite takeoff meetings, walkthroughs, and site visits to validate field conditions, gather data, and adjust estimates as required.
  • Support design-build and preconstruction efforts by providing cost input, value engineering options, and budget updates at key project milestones.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of estimating processes, templates, and tools to increase accuracy and efficiency.
  • Communicate estimate assumptions, risks, and contingencies clearly to internal stakeholders and project leadership.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Construction Management.
  • At least 10 years of estimating experience for large-scale projects consistently greater than $20M in value.
  • Proven experience in industrial, chemical, or manufacturing estimating, or experience with large-scale general contractor projects.
  • Strong understanding of at least two of the following: industrial manufacturing, industrial facilities, large-scale commercial buildings, chemical processing plants, or food processing plants.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop detailed Scope of Work documents for complex projects.
  • Experience reviewing and approving vendor and contractor bid packages for alignment with scope and budget.
  • Proficiency with estimating and preconstruction software, including tools such as ProEst and Procore.
  • Experience using RS Means or similar cost databases for benchmarking and validating estimates.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD for interpreting drawings and supporting quantity take-offs.
  • Strong skills in Microsoft Excel for building detailed cost models and analyses.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Project for documentation, presentations, and schedule coordination.
  • Knowledge of design-build projects and their unique estimating and preconstruction requirements.
  • Ability to travel up to 30%, typically 3-5 days per month, for site visits, meetings, and project support.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities with a high level of attention to detail.
  • Effective communication skills for collaborating with cross-functional teams and presenting estimate findings.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with Class III or Class IV estimating for industrial, commercial, or capital improvement projects.
  • ASPE certification or training, or other professional estimating credentials.
  • Experience with additional estimating software platforms and construction management tools beyond those listed.
  • Familiarity with capital equipment estimating in industrial facilities and manufacturing environments.
  • Experience in industrial engineering or construction management within industrial facilities.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote setting while maintaining strong collaboration with distributed teams.
  • Interest in contributing to process improvements and best practices in estimating and preconstruction.
