Remote Founding Backend Engineer — Go / Distributed Systems

Location: US-based, with preference for San Francisco or New York
Compensation: $175,000–$250,000 base + equity

A recently funded enterprise AI startup is hiring its first external engineer to join a small founding team.

The company builds autonomous agents that automate complex enterprise software implementations. Its platform turns migrations and onboarding projects that traditionally take months into workflows completed in hours.

The product is already being used by paying enterprise customers, with a strong pipeline of companies waiting to onboard.

 

The role

You’ll build the backend systems powering long-running AI agent workflows, including orchestration, integrations, data pipelines, context management, and cloud infrastructure.

This is a hands-on founding role with significant ownership. You’ll work directly with the founders, influence the technical direction of the platform, and have a path toward engineering leadership as the team grows.

What you’ll do

• Build backend services for long-running agent workflows
• Design distributed systems for orchestration, retries, state management, and coordination
• Build integrations and pipelines that process data from multiple enterprise systems
• Improve how agents store, retrieve, and manage context
• Own features from design through deployment and production support
• Help build the company’s agent harness and infrastructure from scratch
• Expand the platform into new enterprise implementation categories

What we’re looking for

• Approximately 3–7 years of backend engineering experience
• Strong production experience with Go or another typed language such as Rust, Java, or C++
• Experience building distributed systems or production data pipelines
• Experience with Kafka, Temporal, Kubernetes, or similar infrastructure
• AWS deployment and cloud infrastructure experience
• Experience building AI agents, orchestration systems, or comparable workflow infrastructure from scratch
• Experience working at a high-growth startup or in another high-ownership environment
• A computer science, mathematics, software engineering, or related technical degree
• Strong communication skills and comfort operating with ambiguous requirements

Tech stack

Go, Rust, TypeScript, React, Kafka, Temporal, MongoDB, PostgreSQL, AWS, and Docker.

Experience with every technology isn’t required, but strong backend fundamentals and the ability to learn quickly are important.
