Job Description

This remote Pharmacy Technician role focuses on reviewing prior authorization requests for prescription medications within a large health plan pharmacy services environment. You will evaluate coverage determination requests for a wide range of health plans and medications, approve or deny based on established criteria, and route decisions to a pharmacist for final review. The position involves minimal phone work, with occasional outbound calls, and offers a long-term career path with the opportunity to transition to a permanent role that includes benefits and paid time off.

Responsibilities

  • Review prior authorization requests for prescription medications across multiple health plans and drug types.
  • Evaluate coverage determination requests using established clinical and benefit criteria.
  • Approve or deny requests within scope and route cases to a pharmacist for final review and sign-off.
  • Track and document all coverage determination requests accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Enter decisions and relevant notes into the pharmacy benefit management (PBM) system and other internal platforms.
  • Notify providers and members of coverage determination decisions through the appropriate channels.
  • Obtain verbal authorizations from prescribers and other authorized parties when required.
  • Request and collect detailed clinical information from prescribers to support coverage decisions.
  • Respond to client and provider inquiries related to prior authorizations and prescription benefits.
  • Refer requests for specialty drugs and complex cases to the appropriate clinical or specialty pharmacy teams.
  • Contact providers for additional information or clarification needed to complete coverage determinations.
  • Notify all relevant stakeholders of decision outcomes, including approvals, denials, and additional information requests.
  • Assist with inbound and outbound patient or physician calls as needed, primarily for information gathering and follow-up.
  • Use multiple computer systems and screens simultaneously to research, document, and process requests.
  • Maintain high standards of accuracy, productivity, and confidentiality while handling sensitive health information.
  • Meet established performance metrics and quality standards for turnaround times, accuracy, and documentation.
  • Participate in required training sessions and apply updated policies, procedures, and criteria to daily work.
  • Contribute to a professional, collaborative remote work environment and uphold all regulatory and company compliance requirements.

Essential Skills

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Current registration as a pharmacy technician in the state of residence.
  • National certification as a Pharmacy Technician (such as PTCB or NHA).
  • Valid and active pharmacy technician license and registration as required by the state of operation.
  • Pharmacy technician certification (e.g., Certified Pharmacy Technician, Registered Pharmacy Technician).
  • Experience as a pharmacy technician in settings such as retail pharmacy, hospital, PBM, call center, or specialty pharmacy.
  • Demonstrated experience with prior authorization processes or prescription benefit coverage determination.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency with basic computer operations and data entry.
  • Ability to work efficiently within multiple computer systems and across multiple screens.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools, including Outlook.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in documentation and data entry.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills for interacting with providers, members, and internal teams.
  • Ability to manage a remote workload independently while meeting performance and quality metrics.
  • Reliable high-speed internet (Wi-Fi) and the ability to maintain a dedicated, quiet workspace with a closing door.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working with Medicare and Medicaid prescription benefits.
  • Bg in pharmacy benefit management (PBM) environments.
  • Experience handling prescription benefits inquiries in a call center or customer service setting.
  • Familiarity with specialty pharmacy processes and specialty drug prior authorizations.
  • Strong customer service skills, including professionalism and empathy in interactions with patients and providers.
  • Comfort with minimal phone work and the ability to handle outbound calls when needed.
  • Ability to adapt to changing policies, criteria, and workflows in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
  • Capability to learn and use new software systems and tools quickly.
  • Interest in long-term career growth within a nationwide healthcare insurance organization.
  • Willingness to work some holidays and rotating weekends as part of a scheduled rotation.
  • Ability to meet or exceed performance metrics to earn additional scheduling flexibility over time.

Work Environment

This position operates in a fully remote, professional environment aligned with the Eastern Time Zone. You will work on multiple computer screens and within several pharmacy and benefit management systems throughout the day. The company provides essential equipment, including a computer, monitor, and headset, while you supply reliable high-speed Wi-Fi, a smartphone, and a dedicated home office space with a door that can close to ensure privacy and focus. Standard schedules require availability Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Atlanta, GA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $23.00/hr.
