We are sharing a specialised consulting opportunity for experienced Senior DoD Staff Writing SMEs with strong expertise in military writing, federal documentation standards, report development, grading-rubric design, and Department of Defense procedures to contribute to an advanced AI training and staff-writing evaluation project.
Selected professionals will develop realistic DoD writing tasks, reference materials, and model responses; evaluate AI-generated staff writing; and establish clear assessment standards for accuracy, tone, structure, and compliance. No prior experience in AI is required.
Key Responsibilities
DoD Staff Writing & Documentation

Develop authentic DoD staff-writing materials across operational and administrative scenarios

Produce Weekly Activity Reports (WARs), Situation Reports (SITREPs), executive summaries, and performance reports
-
Apply appropriate military terminology, structure, tone, and reporting conventions
-
Create materials reflecting realistic federal communication requirements

Maintain strong standards for clarity, accuracy, and audience suitability
Prompts, Artifacts & Golden Responses

Develop structured prompts and input artifacts for staff-writing evaluation tasks
-
Create high-quality golden responses demonstrating expected output standards

Design scenarios covering summarisation, reporting, and administrative communication

Ensure tasks accurately reflect work performed by federal and military personnel

Adapt materials across weekly, monthly, and ad hoc reporting formats
Evaluation Rubrics & Grading Standards

Create grading guidelines for evaluating AI-generated staff-writing outputs

Define criteria covering accuracy, tone, structure, completeness, and compliance

Translate DoD writing expectations into clear and repeatable assessment standards

Develop scoring approaches suitable for varied report and briefing formats

Refine rubrics as project requirements and evaluation needs evolve
AI Output Review & Quality Evaluation

Review AI-generated reports, summaries, and other staff-writing outputs

Identify factual, structural, stylistic, or compliance-related weaknesses

Assess whether outputs follow DoD terminology and documentation conventions

Provide clear written feedback explaining evaluation decisions

Apply consistent professional judgement across repeated review tasks
Federal Reporting & Project Collaboration

Contribute expertise from federal back-office and communication workflows

Support evaluation of PowerPoint briefings, memos, Excel summaries, and related materials

Collaborate remotely with project leads and reviewers
-
Participate in feedback cycles to improve prompts, responses, and evaluation standards

Communicate operational and documentation requirements clearly to multidisciplinary teams
Ideal Profile
-
3+ years of relevant experience supporting the U.S. Department of Defense or comparable federal military environments
-
Experience producing WARs, SITREPs, executive summaries, performance reports, or similar documentation
-
Background in one of the branches of the U.S. Armed Forces is highly valuable

Strong understanding of DoD terminology, procedures, and reporting workflows
-
Demonstrated military or federal staff-writing expertise

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Strong attention to detail and audience-appropriate language

Experience developing or applying grading rubrics and evaluation criteria

Strong analytical judgement when reviewing written outputs

Familiarity with PowerPoint briefings, memos, Excel summaries, and related back-office documentation

Understanding of federal compliance and documentation requirements

Experience across multiple roles, units, or operational environments is advantageous

Comfortable collaborating remotely and providing structured feedback

No prior AI-training or model-evaluation experience is required
Engagement Details

Independent contractor engagement
- Remote — United States only
- Compensation: $40–$80/hour

Work will involve DoD staff writing, report development, prompt creation, golden-response authoring, rubric design, and AI-output evaluation

Assignments may include WARs, SITREPs, executive summaries, performance reports, PowerPoint briefings, memos, and Excel-based summaries
