Job Summary

This project investigates the cyclic torsional behavior of 3D-printed ABS components fabricated using different infill densities and raster orientations. The study evaluates how these printing parameters influence torsional strength, stiffness, deformation, hysteresis, and damage accumulation under repeated loading. The results provide insight into the relationship between additive manufacturing parameters and mechanical performance, supporting the design of more reliable 3D-printed components for engineering applications.

Responsibilities*

• Fabricate standardized 3D-printed research specimens using additive-manufacturing equipment. Adjust and control printing parameters including: infill density, raster orientation, layer height, and print orientation to produce consistent samples for evaluating their effects on mechanical performance.
• Conduct static and cyclic/dynamic mechanical testing of printed specimens using appropriate testing equipment and established procedures. Monitor specimen behavior, document test conditions and failure modes, and evaluate strength, stiffness, fatigue performance, and response to repeated loading.
• Process, analyze, and present experimental data using appropriate engineering-analysis software. Prepare clear graphs and data summaries, compare results across printing conditions, and assess how printing parameters affect the specimens? static mechanical properties and fatigue performance.

Required Qualifications*

• Master's degree or graduate-level coursework in mechanical engineering, materials science, additive manufacturing, or a related discipline.
• Experience operating fused-filament fabrication (FFF/FDM) or comparable additive-manufacturing equipment.
• Knowledge of common 3D-printing parameters, including infill density, raster orientation, layer height, print speed, temperature, and specimen orientation.
• Ability to prepare computer-aided design (CAD) models and slicing files and to produce specimens that meet specified dimensions and research protocols.
• Hands-on experience using mechanical-testing equipment for tensile, compression, bending, or fatigue testing.

Desired Qualifications*

• Prior research experience involving additively manufactured polymers or composite materials.
• Experience with static and cyclic/dynamic test frames, fixtures, sensors, and data-acquisition systems.
• Familiarity with fatigue concepts such as stress-life curves, cycles to failure, crack initiation, and failure analysis.
• Experience designing controlled experiments and evaluating how manufacturing parameters affect material performance.
• Familiarity with relevant ASTM or ISO standards for specimen preparation and mechanical testing.

Modes of Work

Onsite

The work requires, or the supervisor approves a fully onsite presence. Onsite is defined as a designated U-M owned or leased work location within or outside of the State of Michigan
