Overview

A R&D Engineer 2 at Cook Medical is tasked with solving engineering problems, developing new products and processes, and leading portions of new development projects within R&D engineering.  This position will be based out of the Bloomington, IN location working in a hybrid capacity and will work collaboratively with global colleagues on projects within the Interventional Specialty portfolio, with an initial focus on Embolization projects.  For immediate needs, the ideal candidate is a proactive engineer who supports development execution through material tracking, design line support, and on‑the‑ground problem solving in manufacturing and test environments.

Responsibilities

  • Utilize engineering knowledge and technical expertise to lead, organize, execute, and coordinate various aspects of new development work within R&D.  Specifically the initial focus for the candidate include:
    • Track, coordinate, and trace prototype and test materials through internal systems to internal and external test houses supporting feasibility, verification, and validation (V&V) activities; ensure accurate status updates, documentation, and communication with cross‑functional stakeholders.
    • Provide line support by acting as on‑site technical resource for assigned projects; support manufacturing and test execution through real‑time design guidance, troubleshooting, and coordination with the project’s primary engineering point of contact.
    • Identify, assess, and resolve immediate technical issues arising in manufacturing, test, or development environments (e.g., CINC, CRI); escalate complex or systemic issues appropriately while driving interim solutions and clear communication.
  • Complete projects consistent with corporate and departmental objectives by engaging the efforts of other engineering, manufacturing, regulatory, quality assurance, and marketing staff.  The initial focus for the candidate will include working closely with manufacturing, test operations, quality, and R&D colleagues across sites to support execution of development activities, ensuring alignment between design intent and on‑the‑ground implementation.
  • Act as a mentor to other personnel in the Engineering department.
  • Contribute to the intellectual property of the company via invention disclosures and patent applications.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate documentation of concepts, designs, drawings, and manufacturing processes consistent with the requirements of pertinent regulations and Cook’s Quality Management System.
  • Maintain and increase technical, medical and biomedical development knowledge related to the company’s product lines.
  • Maintain accurate and timely reports and records.
  • Must work and interact effectively and professionally with and for others throughout various levels of the global organization to achieve company goals.

Qualifications

Required Experience/Qualifications:

  • BS degree in Engineering or a related degree with a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in communication and working with a wide variety of associates.
  • Experience working independently and directing others towards a common goal/
  • Experience using analytical skills and problem solving.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience supporting engineering activities in manufacturing, pilot, or test environments.
  • Familiarity with material tracking systems, test readiness, or V&V support activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide hands‑on technical support under time‑sensitive conditions.

Physical Requirements/Work Environment:

  • Works under general office environmental conditions
  • Sitting for extended periods, utilizes close visual acuity for working with computers, etc.
  • Personal protective equipment including safety glasses, lab coat and gloves required in most areas associated with this position.
  • Must be able to travel globally.
