Salary Grade

Job Description
POSITION OBJECTIVE
Working under moderate supervision and performing research work in medical and related technical areas involves use of lab / research skills the Research Assistant 1 supports the mission of the School of Dental Medicine by facilitating the digitization and analysis of the historically significant Richardson and Bolton craniofacial growth collections. The primary objective of this position is to assist with high-quality 2D and 3D scanning and data management of physical specimens, while also contributing to the development and validation of automated scanning workflows and landmark identification software. This role directly supports research in craniofacial growth and development, and orthodontics by improving access, reproducibility, and analytic capacity of unique longitudinal datasets
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Perform other research-related duties assigned in support of ongoing craniofacial growth studies, publications, and educational initiatives. (5%)
CONTACTS
Department: Daily contact with supervising faculty and research team members to coordinate scanning activities, review data quality, and maintain research workflow.
University: Occasional contact with information technology, library, or research support staff to share information related to data storage, software, or compliance.
External: Limited contact with equipment vendors or collaborators for technical support or information exchange.
Students: Weekly contact with student researchers or trainees to provide guidance on scanning procedures and data handling.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position has no direct supervision of staff employees.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelors degree in a related field and 0 to 1 year of relevant research experience required; or Associates degree in an approved biotechnology or imaging-related program with 0 to 2 years of experience.
REQUIRED SKILLS
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is primarily conducted in an indoor research environment. The position may involve handling fragile historical specimens, prolonged computer use, and operation of imaging equipment. There may be occasional exposure to laboratory or equipment-related hazards. Some flexibility in scheduling may be required to accommodate scanning workflows or research deadlines.
