Salary Grade

Job Description
POSITION OBJECTIVE
Working under general supervision, plan and carry out research projects in accordance with general plans the Research Assistant 2 ensures smooth, professional operation of the Cytometry & Microscopy Shared Resource. The research assistant will assist and perform shared resources users in cytometric or microscopic data acquisition and data analysis and /or cell sorting services. The research assistant will assist in conducting experiments in case the shared resource has users asking for a full service. Maintain Core instruments within manufacturers specifications.

CONTACTS
Department: Continuous contact with other shared resources Staff to maintain workflow. Occasional contact with shared resources Director (Faculty) and Cancer Center financial administrators to share information and maintain workflow.
University: Continuous contact with shared resources users to provide with daily operations; including Graduate Students, Post-Doctoral Fellows, Research Assistant, Research Associates, Instructors, Staff Scientists, Assistant Professors, Full Professors, Medical Students, Clinicians, and any other investigators that access the shared resources.
External: Periodic contact with users from outside the institution. Periodic contact with company representatives 9services engineers, salespeople, and experts) of companies the manufacture the SHARED RESOURCE instruments.
Students: Periodic, but variable contact, with users that are primarily graduate students. No formal (class shared resource room) teaching is associated with this position.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position has no direct supervision of staff employees. Train new staff; direct the work of students.
QUALIFICAITONS
Education and experience: Bachelors degree and 1 to 3 years of related experience or Associates degree in an approved biotechnology program and 2 to 4 years of experience.
REQUIRED SKILLS
WORKING CONDITIONS
General laboratory environment. May have exposure to hazards. Exposure to animal and human cells, tissues, and fluids, chemicals, radiation, and lasers. Will need to wear appropriate protective equipment such as gloves, coat and eyewear and perform all duties in a safe manner. Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
