The Department of Radiology & Medical Imaging at the University of Virginia (UVA) within the School of Medicine (SOM) seeks applications for a Research Assistant in the SALT Lab. The SALT Lab studies Sodium, Adipose, and Lymphatic Translational Sciences in lymphedema and lipedema. We are seeking applicants interested in learning and applying research skills using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound, bedside measurement devices like bioimpedance spectroscopy, biological assays and biorepository science. The Research Assistant will work within a dynamic team of lab members, collaborators, Core facilities experts, and research administration to carry out ongoing research.
Ongoing research includes a program funded by the NIH National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, "Visualizing Sodium in Lymphatic Disease: A Translational Path" (1R35HL184172-01).
The goal of this program is to study the progression of leg lymphedema, develop the SALT MRI exam for the upper body to image breast cancer-related lymphedema, and explore biological features of lipedema that may improve objective diagnosis. The program will test fundamental hypotheses using data collected from MRI and related in vivo data and coordinated biological samples in well-characterized participants with and without lymphatic disease.
A Research Assistant is expected to learn and develop skills that support their career development. They will have opportunity to engage in the excellent training environment of University of Virginia School of Medicine with access to 12 schools on Grounds and seek advancement opportunities that are aligned with their career development goals.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Assist with study procedures and data collection.
Support data quality control and ensure accurate, reliable study data.
Perform data analysis and interpret research findings.
Collect and process biosamples for research studies.
Perform biological assays and other laboratory procedures.
Coordinate with Core facilities and collaborating laboratories to support study objectives and test research hypotheses.
Contribute to scientific research abstracts and manuscripts as an author or co-author for peer review.
Participate in research activities across studies and projects developed within the laboratory.
Conduct research activities with appropriate guidance and supervision.
Report research progress, findings, and outcomes regularly to the Principal Investigator (PI).
Minimum Requirements:
Education: Bachelor's Degree
Experience: at least 1 of experience in a lab setting.
Physical Demands: This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
Hiring Range: $21.32 - 26.65/hour, commensurate with education and experience.

This is a restricted position starting as a 1-year appointment, which is dependent on continuation of available funding.
This position is based in Charlottesville, VA, and must be performed fully on-site.
