Job Title: Research Assistant I

Division: Integrative Physiology

Work Arrangement: Onsite only

Location: Houston, TX

Salary Range: $47,372 - $55,731

FLSA Status: Nonexempt

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Summary

A Research Assistant position is available in the Department of Integrative Physiology at Baylor College of Medicine. The lab investigates skeletal muscle physiology, with a focus on calcium (Ca²) signaling, excitation-contraction coupling, and muscle force generation. Research approaches include molecular biology and protein biochemistry techniques, confocal fluorescence imaging, and in vitro skeletal muscle force measurements. The Research Assistant will design and conduct experiments, collect, compile, and analyze data, and perform literature searches to summarize findings in support of ongoing studies. Responsibilities also include documenting, interpreting, and presenting experimental results to the principal investigator in a clear and organized manner. Qualified candidates should have basic proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Preferred applicants will have at least 2 years of experience in the care and handling of mouse models and familiarity with in vitro skeletal muscle function measurements. Strong attention to detail, excellent communication and organizational skills, and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment are essential for success in this role.

Job Duties

  • Maintain animal colonies, care and handling of mice, and genotyping.
  • Assist with biochemical and molecular biological assays in support of lab personnel
  • Assist with general lab maintenance and order supplies
  • Designs and conducts research experiments.
  • Collects, compiles and analyzes data.
  • Conducts literature searches and summarizes information in an appropriate format for a particular study.
  • Documents and interprets results of experiments and reports to principal investigators.
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned.
  • May assign activities to less experienced research staff.
  • Harvesting of tissues.
  • Assessment of skeletal muscle contractile properties
  • Assessment of Ca2+ and reactive oxygen species in living skeletal muscle.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or a related field.
  • Two years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in basic science or a related field.
  • Minimum of 24 months experience working with mice.
  • Proficiency in assessing skeletal muscle function and use of fluorescent microscopes.

Work Authorization Requirement:
