Description of Work

SALARY: $74,263.00

The North Carolina Court of Appeals seeks a qualified Research Assistant to provide legal research, analysis, and interpretation of case law on a variety of court cases to a Court of Appeals Judge. You must be admitted to practice law in North Carolina or eligible for licensure as an attorney in North Carolina to apply for this position.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Provide administrative support.
  • Conduct required legal research.
  • Analyze legal data and issues.
  • Prepare legal memoranda.
  • Process emergent motion applications.
  • Proofread published opinions and proposed opinions.
  • Assist the Judge in evaluating cases filed with the court.
  • Prepare draft opinions.
  • Work with Justices on complex cases involving difficult issues of law.
  • Track current developments in the law.

This position reports to a Court of Appeals Judge in Raleigh, North Carolina. Work hours are typically 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM, Monday - Friday. The ideal start date will be no later than November 15, 2026. This position is not remote.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Knowledge of: N.C. General Statutes; N.C. Rules of Appellate Procedure; N.C. Supreme Court and Court of Appeals case law; N.C. Rules of Appellate and Civil Procedure; and some federal statutes and case law.

Ability to: conduct legal research and analysis; draft appellate opinions; and comprehend abstract legal concepts.

Minimum Education and Experience

Juris Doctor degree from an ABA accredited law school.

You must be admitted to practice law in North Carolina or eligible for licensure as an attorney in North Carolina to apply for this position.
