The primary objective of this role is to execute research projects in recycling thermoset polymers and reinforced thermoset polymers to transform them into materials that can be reprocessed using conventional processing methods for thermoplastic polymers. The research involves identifying appropriate catalysts and additives to enable the conversion of waste thermoset polymers and polymer composites into dynamic networks through a mechanochemical technology called vitrimerization. Properties of these dynamic networks depend on vitrimerization parameters (catalyst, ball milling conditions/solid-state shear extrusion, glass fiber or other reinforcement concentration, added fillers, and processing conditions) and will determine potential applications.
Under the guidance of the PI, the Research Associate is expected to work independently, design and plan projects, oversee collaborations, supervise students, and carry out research activities through completion using techniques of polymer synthesis, processing, and characterization.
Essential Functions
- Research Execution & Project Management (60%): Plan and execute experiments for research projects designed by the PI, and design experiments independently or collaboratively. Assist with and coordinate experiments performed by other lab members, ensuring adequate resources and assisting with experimental design and analysis. Oversee project progress, provide regular progress reports and recommendations to the PI, and ensure the PI's experimental strategy is thoroughly explored.
- Publications, Presentations & Funding (20%): Present data and findings at laboratory meetings, scientific meetings, and seminars. Prepare manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication and contribute preliminary data for grant proposals.
- Mentorship & Student Oversight (10%): Mentor and train graduate and undergraduate students. Oversee student research work to ensure projects are completed according to the research plan, teaching lab members scientific discovery methods and established or new research techniques.
- Protocol & Technique Development (10%): Assist the PI in and independently develop new techniques and protocols, and train laboratory members on these new techniques.
- Compliance & Administrative Operations: Ensure full compliance with university, sponsor, and lab safety requirements, maintaining accurate research documentation and performing other duties as assigned in support of the research mission.
In compliance with the City of Cleveland's Pay Transparency Ordinance (effective October 27, 2025), the annual starting base salary for this position is from $52,000 - 80,000. CWRU considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant, as well as the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, and internal peer equity. Required Qualifications
- Ph.D. or terminal degree in Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science and Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, or a closely related field, with 0-3 years of post-degree research experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Established research record in areas relevant to thermoset recycling, vitrimer chemistry, dynamic crosslinking, mechanochemical processing (e.g., ball milling or solid-state shear extrusion).

Supervisory Responsibilities: May provide training or mentorship to students and research staff
- No direct administrative supervisory responsibilities; will train, mentor, and provide day-to-day oversight to undergraduate and graduate student researchers and laboratory staff.
Working Conditions
