This position will provide technical professional support to the Department of Neurosurgery and its faculty members in the area of Neuroscience research focusing on areas such as stroke, brain trauma and spinal cord injury. The incumbent will receive direct supervision from the faculty in the Department of Neurosurgery, Section of Neurosurgical Oncology. 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday - Friday Overtime may be required Lunch and breaks are dictated by work flow Regular attendance is required to perform the functions of this position. Incumbent will maintain a customer-oriented awareness in acknowledging and responding to needs as they occur that customer satisfaction is met at all times. Essential Position Functions & Duties 75% Coordination and Implementation of Basic Science Research: Responsible for independently planning, executing and analyzing protocols under the supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI). Perform cell culture, genotyping, small animal surgery, staining and microscopy, Western blot, RT-PCR, with intermittent supervision from PI. Consult with PI and research staff regarding specific research protocols, experimental design, reagent selection, and data analysis and interpretation related to neurosurgical oncology. Because of complexity of the protocols used, the incumbent must also review research literature and techniques to provide recommendations for Principal Investigators, post-doctoral fellows, graduate, medical, and undergraduate students in their experiments. Maintain and upkeep the laboratory including the inventory of materials and equipment, ordering materials and reagents, preparation of reagents, and maintaining small animal colonies. 15% Coordination of Human Clinical Research: Identify recruitment media and advertising methods for viable clinical trials and applicable subjects. Screen, evaluate, recruit, and schedule eligible subjects under protocols for clinical trials; coordinating appropriate timelines. Maintain patient screening, enrollment logs, consent forms, invoices, and other trials paperwork keeping accurate and up to date records. Serve as the liaison between the Department of Neurosurgery and various sponsoring agencies, including participation in meetings, pre-study site visits, and audits. 5% Data and Document Management: Input experimental data into computers using various spreadsheet and word processing programs. Provide graphs of data using computer graphics packages and construct slides of data using computer imaging/slide maker equipment. Retrieval of scientific information used in grants, meetings, and journals. Works directly with faculty, residents, and research fellows to facilitate submission of manuscripts, grants, presentations, IRBs, and IACUC.
