The LSUHS mass spectrometry core is dedicated to advancing scientific research and innovation in biomedical research. Our team of experts collaborates to push the boundaries of knowledge in metabolomics and proteomics. We are seeking an enthusiastic Mass Spectrometry Technician with experience in HPLC and metabolomics to join our team. As a Mass Spectrometry Technician, you will be critical in supporting our biochemistry and metabolomics research efforts. This position is ideal for individuals with early career experience in biochemistry, particularly those with hands-on experience with HPLC and mass spectrometry techniques.
The successful candidate will be responsible for operating and maintaining mass spectrometry and HPLC equipment, conducting metabolomic analyses, and contributing to our research projects. Essential Job Functions and Other Assigned Duties:
• Manage and Operate Analytical Instruments (50%): Responsible for the daily operation, calibration, and maintenance of mass spectrometry instruments, including LC-MS/MS, GC-MS, and HPLC, to support metabolomics research. Ensure accurate and precise data generation by optimizing instrument settings, performing routine troubleshooting, and implementing quality control procedures. Collaborate with research teams to develop and validate methods for the identification and quantification of metabolites, while adhering to industry standards and best practices.
• Support and Execute Metabolomics/Lipidomics Experiments (20%): Assist in the design, preparation, and execution of metabolomics experiments within the core facility. Perform sample preparation, including extraction, derivatization, and concentration of metabolites. Clean inside core lab as much as possible on a weekly basis. Maintain mass spectrometry supplies and reagents. Prepare samples, including extraction, purification, and derivatization, for GC-MS and LC-MS/MS analysis. Perform routine instrument calibration and method development to ensure accurate and reproducible data.
• Develop and Optimize Analytical Methods for Lipidomics and Non-Targeted Metabolomics (15%): Design, develop, and optimize analytical methods for the detection and quantification of lipids and other metabolites using advanced techniques such as LC-MS/MS, GC-MS, and HPLC. Conduct non-targeted metabolomics experiments, including sample preparation, extraction, and data acquisition. Perform method validation, troubleshooting, and instrument maintenance to ensure high-quality, reproducible results. Collaborate with researchers to tailor methodologies to specific project needs, staying current with emerging technologies and best practices in lipidomics and metabolomics. Document and communicate findings, contributing to the refinement of experimental workflows and protocols.
• Data Analysis (15%): Analyze data using specialized software and provide preliminary interpretations. Ensure adherence to established protocols, maintain accurate laboratory records, and contribute to the development of new methodologies for the analysis of metabolites. Collaborate with researchers to optimize experimental workflows and troubleshoot technical issues.
• Maintain and Manage Biological Samples and Chemical Reagents (10%): Oversee the proper storage, organization, and inventory of biological samples and chemical reagents. Ensure that samples are preserved under optimal conditions, including correct labeling, tracking, and documentation within a laboratory information management system (LIMS). Regularly monitor reagent stocks, prepare necessary solutions, and reorder supplies to ensure continuous availability for experiments. Perform quality checks on reagents and samples, dispose of expired or contaminated materials, and adhere to laboratory safety protocols.
• Manage Scheduling and Billing for Metabolomics Core Lab (5%): Coordinate and oversee the scheduling of equipment usage, experiments, and services within the metabolomics core lab. Ensure that resources are allocated efficiently, and that researchers needs are met in a timely manner. Handle billing operations, including generating invoices, tracking payments, and maintaining accurate financial records. Communicate with users regarding their scheduling requests and service costs, resolving any conflicts or discrepancies. Collaborate with the administrative team to streamline processes, ensure transparency, and support the financial sustainability of the core facility.
• Performs other duties as instructed by the Core Director (5%): Core Director reserves the right to modify or reassign job duties based on need or areas of expertise.
