With over 80 talented and hard-working faculty and staff, the Libraries curate rich print and e-collections, teach information literacy skills, and steward thoughtful spaces for Appalachian State students, faculty, and staff. The University Libraries supports the University with its recent R2 designation through research support, collections, and scholarly communications. Through our digital spaces, scholarship, and service, our library colleagues impact the larger world of knowledge.
The Carol Grotnes Belk Library and Information Commons, the Nicholas Erneston Music Library, and the Hickory Campus Library and Information Commons are our three libraries. We work closely with other UNC System libraries, NC LIVE, the Carolina Consortium, and the Western NC Library Network (WNCLN).
The Digital Initiatives and Special Collections Division is home to faculty and staff working across the Special Collections Research Center, University Archives, Digitization Services, and Scholarly Communication. Together, they build and steward unique collections while providing digital access to rare and one‑of‑a‑kind materials. Their work supports the full scholarly cycle-from research in primary sources to authorship, publication, and discovery-while preserving the University's scholarly output and materials central to its collecting focus.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Research Data Librarian & Institutional Repository Manager will support the University's growing research and creative activities through expert guidance in research data management and stewardship of Appalachian State's Institutional Repository (IR), OpenAIR. This position serves as a campus-wide resource for accessing, managing, analyzing, sharing, and preserving research data, while also ensuring the visibility, discoverability, and long-term impact of App State's scholarly and creative output.

Proposed Date of Hire 09/01/2026 Suggested Salary Range $65,000 - 69,134 for assistant professor and $75,000 - 90,000 for associate professor. ABD with reduction in rank and salary: ABD will be considered for this position. Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If confirmation of defense is not provided by the deadline, the candidate will receive a new one-year fixed-term contract and be hired at the rank of Instructor. The candidate's salary will also be reduced to a lower rate commensurate with other full-time instructors in the same department. However, if degree verification is provided before the end of the one-year fixed-term contract, the candidate will be returned to the rank of assistant professor with commensurate compensation beginning July 1 of the following academic year.
No ABD consideration: Only candidates with an earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution will be considered for the position. Since ABD will not meet the minimum requirements, ABD will not be considered.
