Minimum Qualifications

To be considered for this position, candidates will have the following:

• A master's degree in library science from an accredited institution or equivalent advanced degree;
• Demonstrated ability to teach, evidenced by teaching experience, instructional training, or facilitation of learning activities;
• Evidence of ability for research or other germane creative activity.

Successful candidates ideally have demonstrated experience or interest in the following:

• Providing research consultations, workshops, and instruction sessions to faculty, students, and researchers, preferably in an academic setting.
• Sustaining a working knowledge of institutional repositories and digital repositories.
• Supporting research data management in a library setting.
• Knowledge of trends, standards, and emerging practices in research data management, metadata, institutional repository platforms, scholarly communication, and research impact metrics.
• Familiarity with basic copyright, licensing, and publication of intellectual work, as well as repository metadata standards, and scripting and data manipulation tools.
• Scholarly publishing at institutions of higher education.
• Understanding of funder requirements for data sharing (e.g., NSF, NIH).
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• A dynamic environment where responsibilities may shift based on organizational needs.
• Willingness to contribute to institutional mission.

The Appalachian State University Libraries are essential teaching and research partners, inspiring and guiding all who pursue knowledge. With over 80 talented and hard-working faculty and staff, the Libraries curate rich print and e-collections, teach information literacy skills, and steward thoughtful spaces for Appalachian State students, faculty, and staff. The University Libraries supports the University with its recent R2 designation through research support, collections, and scholarly communications. Through our digital spaces, scholarship, and service, our library colleagues impact the larger world of knowledge.

The Carol Grotnes Belk Library and Information Commons, the Nicholas Erneston Music Library, and the Hickory Campus Library and Information Commons are our three libraries. We work closely with other UNC System libraries, NC LIVE, the Carolina Consortium, and the Western NC Library Network (WNCLN).

The Digital Initiatives and Special Collections Division is home to faculty and staff working across the Special Collections Research Center, University Archives, Digitization Services, and Scholarly Communication. Together, they build and steward unique collections while providing digital access to rare and one‑of‑a‑kind materials. Their work supports the full scholarly cycle-from research in primary sources to authorship, publication, and discovery-while preserving the University's scholarly output and materials central to its collecting focus.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Research Data Librarian & Institutional Repository Manager will support the University's growing research and creative activities through expert guidance in research data management and stewardship of Appalachian State's Institutional Repository (IR), OpenAIR. This position serves as a campus-wide resource for accessing, managing, analyzing, sharing, and preserving research data, while also ensuring the visibility, discoverability, and long-term impact of App State's scholarly and creative output.

Major Responsibilities:

• Provide consultations, group instruction, and workshops for faculty, staff, and students on research data management, data ethics, and open science practices, often in partnership with liaison librarians.
• Manage and develop Appalachian State University's Institutional Repository to support the collection, preservation, discovery, and dissemination of the University's scholarly, creative, and research output.
• Serve as a campus expert in research data discovery, management, sharing, and reuse.
• Collaborate with the Head of Scholarly Communications, liaison librarians, and other Libraries divisions to identify IR content and conduct outreach to faculty, researchers, and rights holders.
• Assist researchers in identifying and accessing relevant datasets through library resources, disciplinary repositories, data clearinghouses, and open data sources.
• Guide researchers in selecting appropriate repositories for data storage and sharing, including the App State Institutional Repository and external disciplinary or generalist repositories.
• Maintain and enhance metadata for IR collections, ensuring consistency, quality, discoverability, accessibility, and alignment with emerging metadata standards.
• Support researcher identity management and research visibility related to authorship, affiliations, ORCID iDs, DOIs, and citations.

Posting Details Information

Proposed Date of Hire 09/01/2026 Suggested Salary Range $65,000 - 69,134 for assistant professor and $75,000 - 90,000 for associate professor. ABD with reduction in rank and salary: ABD will be considered for this position. Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If confirmation of defense is not provided by the deadline, the candidate will receive a new one-year fixed-term contract and be hired at the rank of Instructor. The candidate's salary will also be reduced to a lower rate commensurate with other full-time instructors in the same department. However, if degree verification is provided before the end of the one-year fixed-term contract, the candidate will be returned to the rank of assistant professor with commensurate compensation beginning July 1 of the following academic year.

No ABD consideration: Only candidates with an earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution will be considered for the position. Since ABD will not meet the minimum requirements, ABD will not be considered.
