Overview

This position supports the development of research instrumentation in nuclear, particle, and astrophysics, as well as general laboratory operations at the Yale Wright Laboratory. The candidate is expected to work as part of a team of scientists, technical staff, students, and postdocs on the design, development, and construction of research instrumentation. Part of the work will focus on the assembly of detector components for the Deep Underground Neutrino Observatory (DUNE). Yale Wright Laboratory is one of two US assembly sites for the DUNE charge readout planes.

This position will also support general laboratory operations at the Wright Laboratory as needed. The primary workplace for this position is Yale. Travel may be required for the installation of detector components at off-site research locations. This position reports to the Director of the Wright Laboratory.

Required Skills and Abilities
The position requires technical experience in the design, assembly, and construction of instrumentation. Good communication skills and the ability to work in a highly collaborative team environment are essential.

Yale Wright Laboratory and the Advanced Instrumentation Development Center at Yale offer a highly technical research environment with training opportunities. Interest in developing and acquiring new skills as needed for the research projects is essential.

Preferred Skills and Abilities

CAD design skills and basic computer experience is desirable.

Principal Responsibilities

1. Develops and evaluates performance and reliability of test equipment. Determines types and number of tests to be performed on equipment. Recommends modifications to testing equipment. Analyzes results. 2. Uses blueprints, sketches and schematics. 3. Instructs laboratory support staff in construction and modification techniques. Develops time and cost estimates, material requirements and methodology. Orders materials and supplies. 4. May set up and operate machinery, hand and power tools, and other equipment for the fabrication, testing, and modification of instruments, equipment, components, and systems. May oversee support staff. 5. Performs additional function incidental to research and development technicians. Required Education and Experience Six years of related work experience, four of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and high school level education; or four years of related work experience and an Associate's degree; or little or no work experience and a Bachelor's degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
