Overview:
This position is located in Huntsville, AL
The Auburn University Applied Research Institute (ARI) is seeking a Research Engineer to support the development, setup, and operation of radiation effects testing such as high-energy proton cyclotron, pulsed laser single event effects or Cobalt-60 Total Ionizing Dose (TID) on space hardware and electronics. These testing capabilities will serve as a key resource for radiation effects research and development within a larger state-of-the-art research center focused on radiation effects in advanced microelectronics. This role will provide key technical support involved in building and operating these cutting-edge capabilities.
Responsibilities:
• Assist in the development, commissioning, and operation of high-energy proton cyclotron, pulsed laser single event effects or Cobalt-60 test capabilities.
• Oversee daily facility operations, including maintenance, safety adherence, and troubleshooting.
• Interface with facility users, providing technical assistance, training, and support for testing and research activities.
• Maintain lab equipment and ensure smooth scheduling of testing services.
• Implement safety and radiation protection protocols in compliance with regulatory standards.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
- Scope of experience: research or industrial environments, with practical expertise in lab setup and operations.
Level III – 4 years of experience
Level IV – 6 years of experience
Level V – 8 years of experience
Level VI – 10 years of experience
- Understanding of basic electronics, electrical systems, and the use of laboratory test equipment.
- Demonstrated mechanical skills with the ability to troubleshoot and maintain complex technical systems.
- Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of users and researchers.
- Must be US Citizens
- Must be able to obtain DoD security clearance
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree or above in a related field (engineering or physics).
- Experience working with particle accelerators, ion beams, vacuum systems, optics, and/or laser systems.
- Management of radioactive material
- Familiarity with radiation effects testing, laser safety, and radiation protection protocols.
- Previous experience in a user-support role, including technical assistance and training.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to take initiative in problem-solving and managing tasks independently.
Desired Skills:
- Proficiency in troubleshooting and maintaining complex lab equipment.
- Experience with radiation measurement devices and safety systems.
- Ability to manage facility scheduling and coordinate with internal and external stakeholders.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, proactive, and self-motivated
- Experience with control systems and computer-instrument interfacing.
